Cuba Bible donor goes to Hill to fight travel ban
By Pablo Bachelet
WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 — Joni Scott, a teacher at a Christian school who went to Cuba to distribute bibles, on Tuesday sought help from Congress to block a government fine of $10,000 for violating the U.S. ban on travel to the island.
Scott met with lawmakers ahead of a decision expected in Congress this week on whether funding should continue for the President George W. Bush's enforcement of the travel ban. The issue is being considered by the Senate and House of Representatives as part of the 2004 appropriations bill for the Treasury Department.
''I went to Cuba to deliver bibles, and it's amazing that now I'm being fined $10,000 by the government,'' Scott, a 43-year-old who lives in Indiana, told Reuters.
In 1999, she went to Cuba with her church and unwittingly admitted the visit to a customs official as she reentered the United States, thinking her humanitarian mission was legal under the four-decade embargo against Cuba.
