U.S. to Back Re-Formed Iraq Body
U.S. to Back Re-Formed Iraq Body

By Robin Wright and Daniel Williams
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, November 13, 2003; Page A01

The Bush administration plans to support the creation of a reconstituted governing body in Iraq that will assume a large degree of sovereignty by next summer -- and possibly end control by the U.S.-led occupation before the 2004 presidential election.

The decision was reached after two days of hastily organized talks at the White House with L. Paul Bremer, top U.S. administrator in Iraq, in an attempt to accelerate the political transition, one of two prerequisites, along with security, for the eventual U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

The decision represents a major shift in U.S. political strategy. Mirroring the U.S. military strategy of "Iraqification," Washington now wants to hand over as much responsibility for the political process as is feasible, as fast as it is feasible.

"The focus is how to get to an interim government that can bear the weight of sovereignty and authority -- and to whom we can turn the keys over," said a well-placed U.S. official who requested anonymity.

1. A major shift - how about flip-flopping
all over the place. Is Chalawbi still in place? Bet he is - Iraqi's detest him. In the meantime, keep shipping those "transfer tubes" into Dover, Delaware

2. i'd say this is tied to the assessment of 50,000 insurgents
at that high of a figure, there's a good chance we'll be overwhelmed in iraq very soon. bush will have no chance at re-election if our kids start dying at an unprecedented rate and i think we're going to see some serious high-tailing going on. nothing has been working over there and you can imagine how much pressure is being put on bushco by the conservatives who see the current "charge and spend" tactic of the administration as completely indefensible. bushco has broken all spending records.

15. Not insurgents!
Stop repeating the lie! Iraqi fighters are "partisans" or "resistence fighters" attempting tp throw off the yoke of an occupying power. Insurgent implies current Iraqi "government" has legitamacy, which is DOES NOT!

4. BUSH: WE'RE OUTTA HERE - Mirror
PRESIDENT Bush last night ordered an early American exit from Iraq after a suicide bomber killed 27 people.

He did a U-turn after crisis talks with Iraq's American governor Paul Bremer.

Reports said Bush had "directed" Bremer to "speed the transfer of authority to the Iraqi people".

The US recently rejected a similar proposal by France and Germany.

12. Vietnamization
KoKo shared this link with me a few days ago. It's a fascinating timeline history of Vietnam, and Vietnamization is covered quite well (in the 3rd segment).

13. Thanks for the "Historyplace" link
I graduated from college in 1970 and was reclassified 1-A and was scared shitless that I was going to be sent to Viet Nam. Seeing that timeline really brought back a lot of the emotions I had back then. Really a strange time for our country.

Below is the date tricky dickie announced the "Vietnamization".

June 8, 1969 - President Nixon meets South Vietnam's President Nguyen Van Thieu at Midway Island and informs him U.S. troop levels are going to be sharply reduced. During a press briefing with Thieu, Nixon announces "Vietnamization" of the war and a U.S. troop withdrawal of 25,000 men.

8. The key words are " 2004 presidential election"
Every decision this admin makes is tied to politics. Now, bushie is concerned about falling polling numbers so they want to bail out of Iraq as soon as possible. Sounds like Viet Nam.

14. Time to revise the American Heritage Dictionary
Currently it defines "Quisling" as "a traitor who serves as the puppet of the enemy occupying his or her country." But that was written before 9/11, which changed everything. Now, a Quisling is "a patriot who cooperates with coalition forces to return order to his or her country."
