WHY WE HAVE TO MARCH AGAINST DUBYA
THOUSANDS of people will take to the streets in Britain next week to voice their anger, frustration and political opposition to President George W Bush's policies.

Some will criticise these protestors, writing off their views as knee-jerk anti-Americanism. But the critics should think before condemning them.

Why? Because after almost three years of President Bush's "war on terror" many would argue that the world is now a more dangerous and divided place than it was immediately after 9/11.

Countries don't protect freedom by attacking hard-won civil liberties, locking up thousands of people without charge or trial, and rushing through ever-more draconian laws.

You don't win the hearts and minds of the doubters and the disaffected by riding roughshod over human rights.

But you DO provide terrorists and extremists with the kind of propaganda they could only have dreamt of a few years ago.

3. My 16yr old doesn't read the Mirror but his classmates are already
organising a mass-truancy event from school next Thursday, saying it's part of their 'Political Science' curriculum.

I think they just want to see the toppling and burning of the 20 foot Bush effigy that BBC London News showed last night. Someone has made this model of chickenwire and papier mache and is going to topple it -just like Saddam's toppling in April - and then jump on it and burn it.

Hope it makes the US wire service!

5. They've got one week and the UK TV stations are all covering
the dissent angle like mad....

I expect that by Monday next week most of the London state schools would have got their act together and organised their own interaction in the demo. Last time the Stop the War Co-alition paraded in central London loads of school kids were out in force.

6. It is not proper
-to use young children in such protests as they do not understand the meaning of such things. Older high school age and beyond students fine, as they have begun to form political opinions of their own.

7. Don't think it's a question of 'using' kids: most I know all surf the
net and are pretty well clued up.

When the Iraq war demos took place in London earlier this year, some 10,000 school kids (ages ranging from 12 upwards) took to the streets.
Bush is regularly lampooned on UK TV and has a reputation of an idiot and war monger. Many kids see him as an object of derision.
