I tried to stop Bush: Italian PM
ITALIAN Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said today he had tried to stop US President George W Bush from going to war against Iraq.

"I didn't support every action of the United States. I tried to persuade them not to intervene militarily," Berlusconi said.

"But when I saw there was no way (to prevent it), I stood by the United States."

26. You're right!
You’re right. He’s makin’ this crap up.

The two met in Gawd-awful Crawford, Texas' balmy JULY sunshine and had a joint press conference.

(Snips)
Comment: President Bush and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi discussed a range of issues during talks at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas, including "how to broaden the coalition to bring more security to Iraq," Bush said July 21….Bush thanked Berlusconi for his support on Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans, and the global war against terrorism and said the United States is grateful for Italy's "willingness to bear the burdens" of defending freedom.”

BERLUSCONI: "He (referring to Bush) already mentioned the topics we discussed in our meeting, and already said that we have a common vision on all of these issues, with no exception. I'll go back to Italy and Europe with a belief, which I already had, but which was strengthened by my visit here."

4. I wish this story would get coverage nonetheless
I would like to see Bush counter this. The Bush message now is that they made a decisive move into Iraq, damn the consequences. Well, the allies are peeling away from him instead of seeing his wisdom and closing ranks.

5. The Great Appeasor.
Funny isn't it? Republicans call Democrats 'appeasors' because we didn't want to invade Iraq. How the hell can you appease someone who isn't making demands? If we were saying "Let's just give Saddam Kuwait" then yes, we'd be appeasing.

In fact, the whole world was appeasing Bush. He invaded Afghanistan, and that was fine. He invaded Iraq, and even though most of the world opposed it, they did nothing. What will they do when he invades Syria?

8. I think Berlusconi and Blair
both ended up in the same boat. Neither had any desire to go to war but both felt it was in their own countries best interest to go along with the US in order not to get cut out of all the deals. In a perverse way, they were looking out for their countries economic security.

10. This is significant.
That he would even say this indicates a sea-change in opinion necessitating such a thing. Is he polishing an "anti-war" credential? While laughable, it does mean something.

14. ROFLMAO
Trouble is: with his power over the Italian media he may make people believe it.
This corrupt *******, who is against independent courts, should be removed from office (especially the EU presidency) ASAP.
He makes laws just to suit himself (Spider ban), twists law and order and let's not forget the discussed shoot to kill order against illegal immigrants.

20. He sees more political gain in turning against Bush now
That's significant, no question.
What I would love to ask him is: "Why did you send Italian Soldiers to their death, if you didn't believe in the war?"

23. My son and I went to Rome in May this year. We took a
tour of the Vatican. The tour guide was very informative and told us that Berlusconi was worth billions and that he and Blair often yachted together and went to some exclusive island(I think it was Corsica) where the rich and famous hang.

More revisionist history...I haven't time now but will try to find what he said way back then(6 months ago and with the short attention spans of most people that is practically a lifetime these days.)

God I despise these weasels.

25. I see Willy Wonka to Violet and Tom: "Stop, don't, come back . . ."

WONKA:
OR WHICH WAY THE RIVER'S FLOWING

IS IT RAINING
IS IT SNOWING
IS A HURRICANE A-BLOWING

Bleh!
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of hell a glowing?
Is the grisly reaper mowing?
Yes! The danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!

(Wonka screams. Chaos.)
