Nine lives lost to storms in West Tennessee
From the Tennessean:

At least nine fatalities were reported tonight after tornadoes touched down in several West Tennessee counties; emergency officials were still assessing injuries and the extent of the damage.

Local emergency officials reported eight deaths in Dyer County, and they were concerned the number of fatalities could rise, said Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Kurt Pickering.

**********

In Gibson County an unidentified person was found dead on Big Skinner Road in Bradford, and six injured children were brought into that city’s emergency response center from Griffin Chapel Road, according to a firefighter.

**********

Harry Peplinski with the Benton County Sheriff’s Department said a tornado is believed to have touched down there. The strong winds damaged houses and cars but no fatalities had been reported. Sheriff’s deputies were assessing the damage.

Damage and injuries were also reported in Kentucky and Indiana, with a possible tornado destroying about 15 homes in the Happy Hollow subdivision north of downtown Hopkinsville, Ky., according to weather service and broadcast reports.

2. Very sad. This is going to be a bad year. Someone on DU needs to
start recording storm related deaths in the U.S. (if someone isn't already). More and more people are going to be taking serious notice of our more deadly climate. :-(

3. We have always had the worst weather in the world
Edited on Mon Apr-03-06 09:07 AM by Retired AF Dem
Avg year 10,000 thunderstorms, 1000 tornados and the list goes on. Today is the 32 anv of the super tornado outbreak of 3 Apr 74. Global warming or not, we have sucky weather.

April 3-4, 1974: Super Outbreak
There were an amazing 148 tornadoes over 13 states in the South and Midwest! This is the largest known outbreak for the United States. The deadliest tornado hit Xenia, Ohio, killing over 34 people and doing $100 million in damage. The total number of deaths was 350, and there was $600 million in damage.

January 24, 1967 an F4 tornado ripped a path through St. Louis County, the third worst tornado in St. Louis history, 3 dead and 216 injured. An outbreak of 32 tornadoes struck the central U.S. with 14 tornadoes in Iowa , 9 in Missouri , 8 in Illinois , and 1 in Wisconsin . Never had there been a recorded tornado in Iowa in January until this day. 7 people were killed in this outbreak. This was the furthest north tornado outbreak ever recorded for the winter season.

4. Update.... Storms Across 8 States Leave 23 Dead
NEWBERN, Tenn. (AP) - Thunderstorms battered eight states across the Midwest with tornadoes and hail as big as softballs, killing at least 23 people, injuring scores and destroying hundreds of homes.

Tennessee was hardest hit, with tornadoes striking along a 25-mile path through five western counties Sunday, the National Weather Service said. State troopers sent teams into the area Monday with search dogs, Highway Patrol spokeswoman Melissa McDonald said.

Betty Sisk said she and her 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son tried to take cover but were thrown into the yard as their Newbern home was shredded by the storm.

6. Nature is trying to reclaim that land.
:sarcasm:

Can't remember how many times I've heard that in regards to New Orleans. I guess we should just evacuate the entire Southeast and Mid-south.
