Chronological Oddity to Hit Digital Clock
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer Tue Apr 4, 11:51 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Call it a coincidental sign of our digital times or a reason to stay up late and stare at the clock. Either way, early Wednesday morning the time and date will be 01-02-03-04-05-06.

At 1:02 a.m. and three seconds on Wednesday, April 5, 2006, it will be the first hour of the day, the second minute of the hour, the third second of that precious minute in the fourth month of the fifth year of ... uh oh. It's not really the sixth year.
It's actually 2006 — only in our shorthand is it '06.

"It just happens to be a chronological oddity," said Geoff Chester, spokesman for the U.S. Naval Observatory, an official world atomic clock timekeeper. "If you were to use the full year, that would screw things up completely. You do have to bend it a little if you want to make it work. That's what you call 'Finagle's Law of Best Fit'."

4. Makes more logical sense to sequence it:
01: 02: 03: 04: 05: 06:

Sec Minute Hour Day Month Year

So really, it's a bigger deal mathematically at the first second of the second minute after 3 a.m. on May 5, 2006. That's the logical sequenceing, since there are so many variations in ordering of dates and hour/minute/seconds.

33. Browser compatibility:
USNO ANIMATED GIF CLOCKS
The animated GIF clocks which appear on the Time Service Department web page were developed in 1996 by Richard Schmidt to demonstrate server-push technology with non-parsed headers for real-time displays. The development platforms were Hewlett-Packard UNIX systems with Netscape Navigator. At that time, Microsoft's Internet Explorer was available only for Windows platforms.

The animated GIF clock program ("Content-type: multipart/x-mixed-replace"). clock technology creates an animated GIF image on the fly, and uses server-push technology to display on a Netscape browser. This technology enabled precise control over when the time changes occur at the browser. This is done by starting the running seconds at the top of the next occurring second, and pushing new GIFs out each second. The success of this technique has established it as the USNO's longest-running web application, with over 160 million connections logged.

Microsoft chose not to support server-push technology in its Internet Explorer (as of May 2003). We successfully have tested Netscape 7 for this application. The open- sourced Mozilla browser also supports server-push technology. However, because of the resource load that server-push imposes on our server, USNO does not guarantee to continue to offer this service in the future and reserves the right to discontinue the demonstration at any time. In addition, as browsers become increasingly complex their utilization of caching and input buffering makes real-time displaying less and less feasible.

The animated GIF clocks are offered only as a demonstration. Other clock displays on the Department web site, such as this link, are supported by Internet Explorer.

For actual time synchronization USNO supports only the Internet RFC Standard Network Time Protocol (NTP) available from www.ntp.org.

11. It will happen next year too with 01.02.03.04.05.06.07
It will be the first hour, the second minute, the third second, the fourth one hundredth of a second, in the fifth month, the sixth day of 2007.

Oh, what a coincident. It's right up there with a stopped clock being right, twice a day.

I'm surprised no one has noticed yet...

"it will be the first hour of the day, the second minute of the hour, the third second of that precious minute in the fourth month of the fifth year of ... uh oh. It's not really the sixth year."

What happened to the fifth day?

And besides it would actually be the 5th year of the new millenium, so if you wanted to get it to be correct in that way, you would really want to be pointing at 1:02:03 04/05/07 - Which would be the first hour, second minute, third second, of the fourth month, fifth day, and sixth year... hmm that sucks too. I know the European way of doing it!

1:02:03 04/05/07 would be the first hour, second minute, third second, of the fourth day, of the fifth month, of the sixth year of the new millenium!

Well that just doesnt look as cool! Hmm maybe we drop what it looks like digitally and just go for the lower to higher ranking so:

3:02:01 05/04/07 or the first second of the second minute of the third hour of the fourth day of the fifth month of the sixth year of the new millenium!

Umm, why am I even doing this again?

on edit: Besides, everyone knows you don't do two digit years any more, didn't these guys learn ANYTHING from "Y2K"?

19. Hope some DJ plays this on time:
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

23. Right On
THE DOGS OF WAR

The dogs of war were howling then
Sound borne on a foul smelling wind
Iraqi bodies rotting in the sand
Our soldiers dying in that far off land
Were they asked to fight in a noble cause?
Voices choked with blood their unspoken words

“We do not know, we do not know
They only said that we should go
And they had parades and flags did wave
And it was all so fine and we felt so brave

Some warning voices were in the air
Said oil was the reason we were going there
And that forged in steel was a battle plan
That said we had to rid the world of the evil one
(Though he hadn’t come here to bomb our land
So a lot of us soldiers didn’t understand)

But they still sent us off with a big brass band
Where we soaked with our blood that foreign sand
To finally come home to this special place
To be held eternal in earth’s embrace
“Neath the green, green grass of our new home
Just us and the worms in this quiet tomb

You see we did not know---we did not know
They only said that we should go
And there were parades and flags did wave
And it was all so fine and we felt so brave.”
