Democrats primed to criticize Republicans for appearing with Bush

HARTFORD, Conn. -- President Bush arrived in Connecticut on Wednesday, a state where the Iraq war is extremely unpopular and only 31 percent of voters believe he is doing a good job.

Some Democratic gubernatorial and congressional candidates hope to capitalize on those low approval ratings and use Bush's scheduled appearance in Bridgeport as political ammunition against their Republican opponents, especially those who appear side by side with the president.

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell greeted Bush at Tweed New Haven Airport, and U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., flew to and from Washington, D.C., with the president aboard Air Force One.

But state's other two Republican members of Congress, U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Nancy Johnson, stayed in Washington for legislative business.

"We know that (Bush) is not very popular in our state," said Diane Farrell, a Democrat who is challenging Shays in the 4th Congressional District. "But I think Chris has been loyal to the presidency and this is the president's reward to Chris."

1. Hope they get a lot of pictures!
If I was running a Dem campaign all my ads would have a picture of the Repug hugging Bush and smiling.

6. Bush's visit is causing I-95 to be closed for his motorcade
Interstate 95, the major highway between New York and Boston and already plagued with horrendous traffic jams on a good day, is being closed between Tweed airport in New Haven and Bridgeport for the Chimp's motorcade. That's a distance of perhaps 20 miles. It'll happen twice today, once when Bush goes to give yet another ridiculous "savings accounts are better than health care" speech and then again when he returns. I suppose that helicoptering between the airport and the speech so that tens of thousands of drivers wouldn't have their days ruined never occurred to Karl Rove. Clinton got fried by Pumpkinhead Limbaugh for allegedly delaying a few airliners while he got a haircut in Air Force 1; I wonder if he'll show the same outrage on behalf of the commuters and truck drivers forced to sit in miles of stopped traffic for Bush?
