US Aims to End Iraq Occupation by June

<snip>
The announcement was made following talks between the council and the chief administrator, L. Paul Bremer, who returned Thursday from Washington after talks with President Bush (news - web sites) and senior national security advisers.

Council member Ahmad Chalabi, appearing at a news conference with other members, said the selection of a transitional government should be completed by May, "internationally recognized" and with "full sovereignty."

Council President Jalal Talabani, speaking in Arabic, said the transitional administration would be selected after consultations with "all parties" in Iraqi society.

Council members also said plans called for a permanent constitution to be drafted and an elected administration chosen by the end of 2005.

1. As Church Lady used to say, isn't that convenient??
Why cn't the media see through this farce--claim victory just in time for the elections!

14. public target June, private target late October
Yep.

To fully arm Iraqi security forces in June would be to allow chaos all summer and civil war (Sunni vs. Shia) by October. Cheney and Rumsfeld aren't that stupid.

What they need is a statue to topple in late October. Say gang, how about an election! (queue Spanky and the Gang music here) It'll be a SWELL show!

But there's a risk the Iraq election could fail due to massive attacks on the polling places. So schedule it for after the U.S. presidential vote.

7. Rummy said just yesterday that there was no plan to pull out
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 09:40 AM by underpants
Oh excuse me he said that there was no plan to pull out "early" so when they do pull the troops out it will be when the job is done. :eyes:

Of course when the sand storms hit during "major combat operations" they announced that permenant US bases would be established.

Of course now they are saying that the troops will be out by June (for the eleciton) but that actually the troops won't be coming home.

This is the same push/pull crap that Rove has adopted of late. In almost every article (especially about Iraq) one thing is said and made into the headline and it is directly refuted not just by those in the know but by administration officials. So they can't be wrong and they didn't lie, see how that works?

6. "selected"
that's not the same as "elected" is it?
"Sovereignty" - isn't that the right to rule?
So the US gives the council the right to rule, the council asks the US to stick around, now the US is there not as occupier but as invited guest? That's a little confusing - could you explain it one more time?

8. "When the Iraqis want peace we will leave"
Heard some big wig in DC say that on the news yesterday. They are setting it up to leave forces guarding that pipeline until peace happens and if it doesn't the violence can be blamed on those persistent Iraqi dead enders.

Here is my prediction and I do this with great care seeing how I was way off about Sanchez being fired; The US will pull some troops out next spring and summer playing to the media. Next the Bush Admin will steal another election and then the draft begins and we will send 100s of thousands of men over.

You think they are just going to forget about that oil and the open tap to the US treasury the Iraq war provides? Nope the Bush cronies have tasted blood, the animals will not stop eating until its all gone.

9. They seem to completely ignore the cause and effect of this
Gee where there TERRORISTS :scared: there before we went in?
Did everyone try to warn them this would happen?

If we weren't there would there be this level of violence? Okay Saddam was brutal but was he killing Americans? That is supposed to be W's numero uno priority.

11. Oh well that's OK then
I'm sure the "insurgents" aka resistance will all be happy with this new turn of events and go back to their productive lives, knowing that Utopia will be reached in 7 months.

12. these buffoons have no freaking plan
they plan to continue to hang on to power in any way they can - that's their only "plan".

They will churn up the lives and futures of countless American and Iraqis and anyone else that stands in their way.

They are completely corrupt and have no souls, thus they cannot rot in "hell" because for them there is no hell.

They condemn to hell the rest of the world with their Machiavellian complexes.

They have gone into an unwinnable situation and have committed the soul of our country.

They have destroyed any credibility that we, as a nation, possessed.

I am certain that it will take more than the rest of my lifetime to heal the oozing wounds that they have caused.

Hate is too simple a word for what I feel for them.

15. If we are going to leave them worse off, why not leave now?
This means that we have taken a country that was miserable and left it miserable, destitute and destroyed . Makes me proud to be and American.

Their cynicism knows no bounds. They are despicable.

to this thread that shows WP, NYT and Ya-hoo carry the same story but come to slightly different conclusions. You may want to check this one out as well.
