Rendell Leads Pa. Governor's Race in Poll

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Ed Rendell led his Republican challenger, Pro Football
Hall-of-Famer Lynn Swann, in a statewide poll released Wednesday and held a particularly
lopsided lead among black voters.

Rendell was favored by registered voters in the Quinnipiac University poll 47 percent
to 37 percent.

Among the smaller sample of black registered voters, 74 percent supported the Democrat Rendell,
who is white, while 12 percent supported Swann, who would become the state's first black governor
if elected. Another 12 percent were undecided.

More than half of the overall respondents said they still don't know enough about Swann,
who is making his first bid for political office, to form an opinion about him. Rendell was mayor
of Philadelphia before winning the governor's race in 2002.

1. Swann was an awesome receiver but if I were a Pennsylvannian, Ed Rendell

would have my vote in November for re-election.

2. Good news! Republicans love to run people with high name recognition

value. When you think about it, they've run a LOT of athletes (and untalented actors) because of their high visibility and their ability to leave an imprint on voters' memories for NON-POLITICAL achievements. It almost seems like cheating, doesn't it?

9. For R's, the role of an elected official is to distract attention from ..

.. the corporate goodfellas who are really in charge.

So an ideal R elected is somebody who many people kinda like and willing shoot-offs his mouth -- further convincing devotees that the executive is wonderful and honest, while driving detractors up the wall AND generating that ALL-IMPORTANT distraction.

Best, too, on this theory, that the official be a nitwit who doesn't know much about any of the issues: then everything can be left to a wide circle of lower-level appointees selected by the corporate gang.

That's why they thought so highly of Ronald McDonald as prez twenty years back and why they were favorably comparing W to Ronnie ...

I had some republican (I assume) pollster call me about PA's race last week. It was one of those "how much do you agree with this statement" jobbies. He said something like "Lynn Swann was a leader on the football field, and a sucessful small business owner. The leadership skills he attained in his life are necessary to propell Pensylvania into the future. Do you agree, dissagree, and blah blah blah".

I busted out laughing right on the phone and said, "If he's catching for Pennsylvania, I guess I'll have to pass".

8. Rendell's bulging war chest dwarfs Swann's

Rendell has $15.5 mil compared to Swann's $1.5 mil. Analysts are surprised that Swann has not raised more money. Rendell had a head start, however.

I have met Ed Rendell several times, and have seen him work a room.
