U.S. Occupation to End by June After Selection of Transitional Administration
By Slobodan Lekic
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - American administrators will hand over sovereignty to a new transitional government by June, the Iraqi Governing Council said Saturday, announcing an accelerated U.S. plan for ending the occupation of Iraq. <snip>

Council member Ahmad Chalabi, appearing at a news conference with other members, said the selection of a transitional government should be completed by May. The government, he said, will be "internationally recognized" and with "full sovereignty." <snip>

The new government will be "in charge of security in Iraq, internal security as well as the budget of Iraq and in control of all parts of Iraq. Then no other powers will have authority concerning internal security." <snip>

1. In the middle of copyright editing - prior thread disappears!
In any case -

This appears to be a Rove election decision -

cut and run before election

2. Exactly what I was thinking, papau

It's a "gotta-get-it-done" before end of June just like the "gotta-have" the 9/11 Commission reports by the end of May, all to get this "nonsense" swept under the rug and clear the way to another theft of the presidency.

3. I have to assume here that
a) Ahmed Chalabi has been selected to be in charge of Iraq, since he was the one who emerged from the meeting with the news.

b) they are most probably doing this to minimize their presence in Iraq as occupiers. The are keeping their fingers crossed that violence will go down once an Iraq government is put in place.

c) and yes, they're doing it ahead of the elections next year.

On b), I'm not sure if this will decrease the violence because the Iraqis will know only too well that this is going to be a "puppet"government. Whether the US clears out or not, the new government will be targeted as traitors. The resistance fighters have shown lots of times that they will attack any who collaborate with the americans, as the local police and the fledgling Iraqi council.

I'm willing to bet money that this new plan won't work. Especially if they put in "the man with the plan" Chalabi.

6. Council President Jalal Talabani
Talabani said the new government would negotiate an accord with the U.S. military on American troops's role in the country after the handover.

"As of now, we will begin a dialogue with occupation authorities on the security matters, but when the transitional government is set up all authorities will be transferred to this government," he said.

- Talabani refers to them as occupiers. What's this? I thought they were liberators. In regards to "B" violence will not decrease our troops will still be over there like sitting ducks.

7. If the U.S. pulls out in June, and leaves Chalabi in charge-
Iraq will be embroiled in civil war by July.

BTW- "Chalabi In Charge" what a GREAT idea for a sitcom, set in Baghdad, with lots of funny foibles of the wacky iraqi.

10. Occupation ends after Dem nominee selection. No doubt.
They intend to spend 87 billion to buy a semblance of success for their mission and the beginnings of democracy in Iraq. Just in time for the general election.
