Sturgeon filled with contaminants
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=fcfaf33692522a6c

Research from Oregon State University shows that white sturgeon are declining because of high levels of foreign chemicals, including DDT.

Carl Schreck and Grant Feist, biologists in Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences, found that sturgeon in the Columbia River in some areas above the Bonneville Dam -- east of Portland, Ore. -- have high amounts of toxic contaminants in their livers, sex organs and muscle tissue. Fish living in reservoirs behind the dams had concentrations of chemicals up to 20 times higher than those below the Bonneville Dam.

North America's largest freshwater fish, white sturgeon can grow to 20 feet in length, weigh more than 1,500 pounds and live for more than a century.

During the last 25 years, the population of white sturgeon in the upper reaches of the Columbia River has dropped sharply.

DDT and foreign chemicals... where is that coming from... I thought we got rid of DDT???

4. they're long lived and they live in association with bottom sediments....
That's a recipe for bioaccumulation. Most of the sturgeon alive today lived through the entire organochlorine era and many are probably still accumulating pesticides and their degradation products from long term storage in deep sediments, along with all sorts of other run-off borne pollutants and industrial discharges.

5. Thanks for the article. I have a suggestion for DU'ers who take the time
to go to the link. If you're interested, click on the photo on the column to the right of this story, concerning America's prisons. It contains these stats I have NEVER HEARD before now:
Today, America has more people locked up compared to any other country in the world, half a million more than China, in fact, which has a population five times greater than the US. "No other society in human history," said the American organization California Prison Focus, "has imprisoned so many of its own citizens." Studies "reveal that the United States holds 25 percent of the world's prison population but only five percent of the world's people."

Sturgeons are a little larger than salmon!

Sorry to change the subject, but it looks as if someone with time can read two good articles at the same link.
Thanks.

7. Judi Lynn, start your own thread with this subject. It's a stand-alone
item, in my humble opinion. Then people can "digest" the information you are suggesting we read as a sidebar to this thread.

JUST A SUGGESTION: Start it in the General Discussion forum.

Thanks.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

9. Thank you, Radio_Lady. I just posted it there.
I really didn't want the story to fly by unnoticed, but it had not occurred to me to post it alone. Hope people take a moment to check those horrid numbers! :hi:

6. they can live for a century! WOW- we need to make sure they do not die off
Pretty soon the ecological damage caused in the last 100 years
of humans pillaging this earth may be beyond recovery if people don't
radically change their habits-
There are now aprocximately 6.6 billion consumers alive on this planet.
Strict pollution standards need to be enforced with strict penalties.

And by the way, it's a little off topic but since they mentioned fish--
I have to add :
there are not enough fish in the sea to have a sushi bar
on every corner
of every street
in every town
in every country
in the world-
-and the sooner we realize that we must respect the environment
then the sooner we can streamline our collective consuming
to affect the greater picture in a positve way-

Conscious consumer choices can drastically affect all corporate actions-
-they're in it for the money-
if destruction of the environment becomes unprofitable then they move on quickly-
if it remains profitable they stay in til the bitter end, despite all protests...
and a very bitter end it is--

8. OK. Just tofu and edamame for me -- how about a California roll?
Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 01:30 AM by Radio_Lady
Or is imitation crab and avocado filled with other contaminants?

Between the fattening stuff and the contaminated stuff, THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO EAT.

:sarcasm:

10. I just had sturgeon for dinner
How delightful to know it could have been full of DDT. Mine was caught on the Umpqua though, hopefully it wasn't poisoned. :scared:
