Hungary's Socialists claim victory in first-round election (Roundup)

Budapest - The leader of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), Ferenc Gyurcsany, claimed victory Sunday in the opening round of Hungary's first parliamentary elections since joining the EU in 2004 as the vote count neared its end.

'Whichever way I look at these numbers, I see that the MSZP won the first round,' he told a crowd of cheering supporters at MSZP election headquarters. 'We won, and Hungary will also win.'

With 97 per cent of ballots counted, the MSZP had scooped 43.27 per cent of the votes for party lists, compared to 42.15 per cent for the conservative opposition Fidesz party.

Opposition leader Viktor Orban remained upbeat and urged his supporters to redouble their efforts for the next round.
