Ohio Gov. May Face State Ethics Charges (AP wire)
By JOHN McCARTHY
Associated Press Writer

April 10, 2006, 1:19 PM EDT

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A state office that monitors lawyer behavior recommended Monday that Gov. Bob Taft be disciplined for failing to report golf outings and other gifts while in office.

Taft pleaded no contest in August to the ethics violations and was fined $4,000. He was the first Ohio governor to be charged with a crime while in office.

14. No, no, no, no, no
Keep him right where he is. We want him there. He's harmless. He only has a 6% approval rating. If he leaves the R's could put in someone with some credibility. He's a great asset for us right where he is.

17. Ohio Gov. Taft could be disbarred
COLUMBUS, Okla., April 11 (UPI) -- The disciplinary counsel of the Ohio Supreme Court has filed a complaint that could lead to Gov. Robert Taft's reprimand or disbarment.

The complaint stems from Taft's no-contest plea in August to failing to disclose golf outings and other gifts from contractors doing business with the state, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Taft was fined $4,000 and repaid $5,700 in gifts.

"Improper conduct on the part of an attorney in government service is more likely to harm the entire system of government in terms of public trust," Disciplinary Counsel Jonathan Coughlan said.

Taft, a member of Ohio's best-known political family and a lawyer, is in his final year as governor. He is barred by state law from running for a third term.
