Governor (Napolitano) Vetoes Fetal Pain Bill
PHOENIX (AP) -- Gov. Janet Napolitano on Tuesday vetoed a bill supported by abortion opponents that would have required doctors to tell women seeking abortions that their fetuses could experience pain even if the women receive pain medication.

"This bill represents an unwarranted intrusion by politicians into the doctor-patient relationship," Napolitano said in her veto letter. "The Legislature should not attempt to substitute its judgment for that of trained physicians with respect to professional advice given to patients."

Napolitano, a Democrat, is an abortion-rights supporter who since taking office in 2003 has vetoed several measures supported by abortion opponents.

Supporters argued that the Republican-sponsored bill (HB2554) would help ensure that women can make informed decisions about their health, while critics said during legislative debate that the measure would erode abortion rights.

2. A woman can make well-informed decisions about her health ..
with her DOCTOR. She doesn't need the propaganda of the Religious Hardright!

Thank you, Gov. Napolitano! It was a crappy piece of legislation. 90% of abortions are done in the first trimester, and there is NO credible evidence that the fetus experiences pain at that point, since it has NO developed nervous system. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is the size of my thumbnail.

As to the other 10%, the vast majority involve very tragic situations, such as extreme fetal deformity. In such a tragic situation, the last thing the woman involved needs to listen to is someone she doesn't even know, a propagandist, who has NO knowledge about her particular situation, unlike her DOCTOR.

Shame on those bullies who want to beat a victim over the head with THEIR narrow version of morality.

3. You are very eloquent and I admire that
The only time I've known of a partial birth abortion was when the baby was so deformed that it could not survive the birthing process. Why the right wing would force women to deliver these babies, DOA, is beyond me. It is immoral and cruel.

The right wing need to go pray among their own and keep their religious beliefs out of our laws.

9. Thanks.
Yes, the religious hardright needs to leave us alone. They never will, though; their leaders know that they feel empowered when they bully someone else. I believe their leaders are all about power and money.

Your words make me sad - they are so true. How someone could make a woman carry a certain kind of pregnancy to term IS beyond me. That just tells me they don't care about being cruel.

Take care!

4. I notice religious nutjobs the world over have an authoritarian streak
It doesn't matter if we're talking about religious nutjobs in the US or in places like the Middle East.

They always want to force you to live by their rules. They think they know best, and they believe so much in their own ideology that they would be willing to forcefully make the "right" choices for you. They do not believe in free will.

10. And she is well liked...
they went through a series of corrupt (shock) GOP govenors that were national jokes. She had done some cleaning up. She is one of those that you think of as potential leaders of the party. She knows how to dispatch these GOP.

11. My thought too!
Apparently, she is unmarried and doncha just KNOW what the hardright would make of that if she's on the ticket. She certainly would have a folloiwng among prochoicers, male and female. It would be great. She might get a fair share of the Italian American vote too!
