Opponents of immigration (republicans) plan their own rallies
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 05:07 PM by newyawker99

Local residents who say they are motivated by the recent show of force among Hispanics throughout the nation and here in Atlanta plan two separate protest rallies against illegal immigration at the state Capitol over the next three days.

A Smyrna mother-daughter duo, Pam Pinkard and Donna Walker, are staging "Americans' Job and Tax Rally" at 3 p.m. today. The women say they're relying on e-mail and word-of-mouth to draw people to their event, and have no idea how many will show

On Monday, D.A. King of Marietta is holding a noon rally at the Capitol to protest recent calls by illegal immigrants for amnesty.

King, founder of the Dustin Inman Society — an anti-illegal immigrant group — has a far more organized network, although his most successful rally to date, held earlier this year, only drew about 75 people.

King said he believes rallies around the nation by illegal immigrants and their allies, including a Monday rally in Atlanta that drew an estimated 40,000 people, have stirred Americans to action.

"Let me say that I am very, very grateful to the illegal alien amnesty lobby for putting these rallies on," King said Friday. "I probably have received 5,000 e-mails, people asking me to do something to respond to the illegal aliens and their supporters rallying in the streets and demanding unconditional citizenship in this country."

1. Everybody bring your crosses, gasoline and matches...
and join in. BTW, a white sheet with a pointed headcovering is the official uniform for the rally!

23. And hanging ropes...
I'm sure the GOP can't wait to reinstate the institution of slavery. I wish they could be a bit more honest. It's easier to treat Mexicans illegals as "guests" so that they have no access to the same rights as Americans. When they complain, all these plantation owners can dispose of them anyway they wish.

4. I think the time to march against illegal immigration...
was way before we had 12 million of them here. And they ought to be out picketing the employers who are displacing them with undocumented workers instead of aligning themselves with a bunch of closet racists hiding behind American flags.

5. Actually Bush is for illegal immigration so
thats a republican issue. Not a Dem one. The vast majority of Dems are against illegal immigration and amnesty..or open borders. Thats a Bush thing. He likes the cheap labor that comes with their exploitation.

21. "Big Bidness" runs the Republican party.
Corporate greed owns the Republican party. They've paid big money for that party -- and the truth is, Republican leadership could care less about the "little people" who vote for Republican leaders on their phony "values" agenda. That's just more "wink, wink" from the top tier Republicans who want the votes but know that corporate America owns their souls. And you're right. That means not even paying minimum wage. They want a slave class that does what they're told and can't talk back. No benefits. No minimum wage. And even more obscene profits for Dubya's boys.
These people organizing protests are delusional. They should be protesting Republican leadership.

6. She doesn't know those people are all illegal immigrants
I'm rather sick of white people who pretend their ancestors didn't immigrate here....and who act as if those ancestors KNEW English the moment they crossed the damned border.

My solution is this: We should actively advocate a equal swap....one Latin immigrant from one neocon Republican christo-fascist. Seems like the nation would get a fair deal to me.

I'd like to know why the damned newspaper didn't ask Pinkard if they would be displaying the confederate battle flag - you know, the illegal "American" symbol of southern heritage. After all, southerners didn't reapply for citizenship and they didn't want it - they got amnesty.

10. Typing white is just fine.
And that's right - racists understand racism, especially when it's directed back at themselves. It doesn't take any amount of research to realize that usually the adaptation to a new society historically occurs in the second or third generation. . .yet Republicans want it to be immediate, even if it wasn't required for their own ancestors.

I stand by my idea. We should offer to swap one neocon christo-fascist wingnut for each immigrant. . .and we'll let the neocon take their confederate battle flag as a heritage momento.

8. This issue isn't cut and dried ...
Am I to assume that anyone of 5 billion impoverished people in this world has a right to claim American citizenship if they can just find a way to physically cross our borders and then work and learn English? That seems to be the argument.

Illegal immigration brings voters to the Democrats and it brings money to the Republicans. That's just the way it is.

I have a brother-in-law who is in construction who is a lifelong Democrat. He says that several years ago as the housing boom got in full swing in our area, it looked like he was going to be able to earn a decent living for the first time in his life since contractors were so desperate for workers. But he says that about 6 months later the largest contractor in town one day started bringing in workers from Mexico and soon most of the others followed. Now he's given up on being able to save for his kids' college fund or anything like that, and he'll be lucky to have work at all if the housing market keeps slowing. He just can't compete against people who are willing to live in an apartment with 6 other workers.

Now put yourself in my brother-in-law's position. He's supported the Democratic party his entire life and he sees that it is actively promoting the very same illegal immigration that is costing him a shot at a comfortable living. Would you not be a good bit disillusioned?

So anyway, I find it ironic that immigration is now a big Democratic issue when what it does it take money from the blue collar workers and put it in the hands of the fat cats. Pretty soon we're going to have third world standards for blue collar labor with a fat and sassy business aristocracy. But at least our Democratic politicians will control Congress so I guess that's what's important.

17. rigel434 Great post there are many on DU that agree
Don't waste your time with logical thinking. You can give a thousand examples of how it's the Republicans that want the illegal immigration to exploit cheap labor in order drive down wages and destroy unions in the Us. Your arguments will be dismissed as racism.

22. You've explained what a difficult situation
we're in. Realistically, we can't deport millions of people. But our state social services are depleted trying to take care of all of our citizens, and those who are here illegally. Plus, as you've written, the good kids who play by the rules get punished. The Republican business class loves having workers who don't demand even the most basic benefits and who will work for less than the minimum wage. Profits are huge while American wages remain stagnant -- or worse.
The businesses who employ illegals should be fined for breaking the law. But that doesn't happen.
And where's the rhetoric from the right against those businesses? Why is it all aimed at the illegal workers?
They wouldn't be here if people weren't willing to pay them. And break the law.

13. Good (read why)
Every poll out there is showing a) the average American ranks immigration low on the list of concerns (Iraq, education, health care, etc. always rank higher) and b) those that rank it high usually are pro-immigration (Hispanics rank it number one and they far outnumber the xenophobic right wing). So guess what will happen when the GOP tries to stage these rallies - they'll get a few hundred people to show up (if that). The poor attendance will harm their cause more than help it. The numbers are not on their side - they're with the Democrats.
