Gallup: 57% Say U.S. Won't Win in Iraq

NEW YORK A report on a new Gallup poll released today shows that President Bush approval rating on his handling of Iraq is now at 32% -- tied for the lowest rating Gallup has measured.

The survey, taken April 7-9, also shows that 57% of Americans think the United States will not win in Iraq.

In a surprise, the new poll found that 44% of Republicans now back withdrawing some or all troops from Iraq. The number for all Americans, 64%, is higher, but the fact that better than 4 in 10 Republicans back this idea is notable. Indepedents are tracking much closer to Democrats on all issues related to Iraq.

In another finding, 57% of Americans say it was a mistake to send troops to Iraq, while 42% say it was not. Since December 2005, either a plurality or majority of Americans have said it was a mistake.

1. You can't win a war crime.
I find it so telling that we're still stuck in the win or lose discussion. The country needs to find the reverse gear. The media has a way of ignoring things and flying right past them. I think America missed the turnoff. The sign that said "War Crimes" was a few miles back. This is not a war. This is an act of aggression against a nonthreatening country. And as such it cannot be won. You can't win a war crime.

2. The goals is not to win "in", they want to win Iraq like a trophy.
This is Neo-Con survival, to hell with the rest of the world including the "old American Democracy".

3. Interesting that they say the "US won't win" It is not supposed to
be about the US. Wait a minute, it was supposed to be about WMD and then it was about liberating Iraq.

Now it is about................I have no idea.

10. Isn't it strange that the U.S. talked about getting electricity and
clean water to the Iraqis right after the invasion, and we're going build all those hospitals and schools. That was over three years ago and very little has been done to date.

7. First off, no one knows what "winning" means
Get rid of Saddam? Done. Get rid of the Ba'athists? Done. Get rid of WMD's? Done (by attrition and the UN, though).

Install a democracy? They've already had two elections (kinda sorta). A constitution? Got one already (although seriously flawed).

So, what is there to do? Get rid of Al-Qaeda? Won't happen. Too many recruits "singing up" every day because of US atrocities and mismanagement.

All you've got left is to try and quell the unrest. And that could take decades as long as the US military is in country and a big, fat target.

Victory? Not in our lifetime.
