Former Federal Prosecutor Indicted In Tax Avoidance
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A former top federal prosecutor who later headed the North Carolina Republican Party and was
Superior Court judge was named Tuesday as a suspect in a tax fraud conspiracy.

Sam Currin, Wilmington tax attorney Ricky Graves and a North Carolina couple who headed a series of off-shore
financial companies, were charged after a sting operation by Internal Revenue Service investigators.

Currin was formerly an aide to Sen. Jesse Helms, the United States attorney for eastern North Carolina from 1981
to 1987, and a Superior Court judge until 1990. Since then, he's represented criminal defendants in the state's
federal courts.

Federal prosecutors said Currin was indicted by a federal grand jury in Charlotte on tax fraud conspiracy. He's
also charged with obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and perjury charges in a related grand jury
investigation of securities fraud.

I forgot to give some additional background on Currin.
Such as:

Chairman of NC GOP 1996-1999

Law professor at Campbell University (Helms' favorite)

"Law and Order" type Federal prosecutor

How many former staff members of Jesse Helms have now been indicted? (including shoplifting)

Former State Ag Official Makes First Court Appearance
Mike Blanton Indicted On 10 Federal Counts In Phipps Scandal

POSTED: 7:04 a.m. EDT June 11, 2003
UPDATED: 7:27 p.m. EDT June 11, 2003

GREENVILLE. N.C. -- A former state agriculture department official accused in a cover-up made his first court appearance in federal court in Greenville Wednesday.

Mike Blanton resigned his position as Deputy Agriculture Commissioner last Sunday after being named in a 10-count indictment.

The grand jury said Blanton lied to FBI agents and a grand jury about his knowledge of then-Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps' campaign finances and coached a witness to lie.

Blanton appeared Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Louise Flanagan, who spent 50 minutes reading the charges against him.

During that time, Blanton sat somberly at the defendant's table next to his attorney, Sam Currin.

He is charged with lying, altering checks and pushing others to block the investigation.

11. Blanton is/was a Democrat

I believe that Blanton is a Democrat who was part of the Meg Scott Phipps scandal in the NC Dept. Of Ag a few years back. Meg wound up in jail (with Martha Stewart).

Currin has lots of issues all on his own.

12. Thanks. I didn't take time to make sure. It needs to be corrected.
Anyone who intentionally had anything at all to do with Jesse Helms has real issues, in my view!

My, my, my... it certainly seems like a pit of corruption that came from the Honorable Senator's office...

15. Hey, you're right! I didn't notice this fact when the story was making
the rounds right after he was caught working his plan on Target.

From the Washington Post:
Allen is a self-described born-again Christian who got his start in politics working for Jesse Helms (R), the conservative former North Carolina senator.

Allen and his mentor
Article from 2004:
December 09, 2004
Could Anti-Safe Sex, Anti-Gay, Anti-PWA, Anti-Choice, Former Jesse Helms Attack Dog Claude Allen Be The New HHS Secretary?
Conservative activists are pushing for the notorious Claude Allen to replace Tommy Thompson as the head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Allen as HHS Secretary would be a public health disaster.

Overseeing HIV/AIDS programs as Deputy Secretary, Allen has been the Bush Administration's point man for abstinence-only sex ed and HIV prevention -- the same programs that won nationwide criticism this week. (See additional articles below.) Allen told U.S. News and World Report in 2002 that any discussion of safe sex and contraception for young people is "inappropriate." He removed condom and safe sex information from the CDC website, and has repeatedly misrepresented scientific studies demonstrating the effectiveness of condoms in preventing HIV infection. Allen is said to have overseen HHS investigations aimed at financially penalizing AIDS advocacy groups who questioned Bush administration policies, and has worked with extremist religious groups and legislators to create a "witch hunt" atmosphere around AIDS advocacy and services.

Earlier in his career as an aide to Senator Jesse Helms, Mr. Allen was quoted by a local reporter saying that Governor Jim Hunt, Democratic candidate for a North Carolina Senate seat in 1984, was vulnerable because his campaign could be "linked with the queers." (Allen was the first African-American staff aide ever hired by Helms, a viciously race-baiting "former" segregationist.)
