Athens representative trying to block Republican map change

ATLANTA - A state representative from Athens hoping to make a run for the Senate filed papers in federal court Thursday, seeking to block a new Senate map that would divide her hometown - a Democratic stronghold - into two Republican-dominated districts.
Rep. Jane Kidd, a Democrat, and other plaintiffs are asking a panel of federal judges to let them join a lawsuit that Republicans used to successfully throw out districts drawn by Democrats in 2001.
Earlier this year, the Republican-controlled Legislature approved a new map that splits Clarke County, the geographically smallest county in the state, into two Senate districts.
Kidd, who had announced plans to seek a Senate seat being vacated by its current holder, and other Democrats accused Republicans of making the change to give their party an advantage.
