Judge's Order to Keep KPMG Papers Private (rich tax break case)
NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge in Manhattan signed a protective order Friday to keep confidential some documents to be turned over by KPMG LLP, as part of a subpoena request in a fraudulent tax-shelter case against a group of former KPMG partners.

Prosecutors have charged 16 former KPMG tax partners and two other individuals with conspiracy and tax evasion, alleging they participated in a scheme that allowed wealthy people to avoid paying $2.5 billion in taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. The case is expected to go to trial in September.

Lawyers for the former KPMG partners have questioned whether prosecutors placed undue pressure on KPMG to not pay legal fees for those ex-partners to avoid violating a nonprosecution agreement with the government.
