Vietnam can become like India: Gates

HO CHI MINH CITY: Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Vietnam has the potential to develop as an outsourcing center similar to India, during his first visit to the Southeast Asian nation.

Gates met Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and President Tran Duc Luong in Hanoi, before crossing town to take questions from students at the Hanoi University of Technology.

The visit by the head of the world's biggest software company takes place two months after Intel, world's biggest semiconductor maker, said it would build a plant in Vietnam.

``It's great that Intel is coming here, and no doubt that other information-technology manufacturers will see the kinds of skills and labour here and come into the market,'' Gates said in Hanoi.

As long as we have the energy to do it, it will continue.

2. When does that trashman plan to move there?
I feel a certain hostility to these ventures.

4. I visited both Vietnam and India last month
And, I may be wrong, but it looked to me as if the Vietnamese were actually better off than their Inidian counterparts.

I mean, the poverty, the slums of Mumbai and Calcutta really shocked me.

7. It's a very different culture in Vietnam
Their English is not as good, but their work ethic is legendary (as is their national pride). Not sure if any Vietnamese wants to be like an Indian, though.

Vietnam is definitely a much more pleasant place to visit.

Vietnam can become like India.
Vietnam can also enjoy the destruction of urban greenery
so butt-ugly malls can be built
said malls being cesspools of waste - a waste of precious electricity and groundwater, a waste of time by the dumbed-down kids of this generation, a waste of hard earned money to replace things that were bought yesterday
Where the middle classes are imprisoned behind high walls of residential luxury
while the urban poor stich together huts of tarpaulin
where farmers drink pesticide and die
while the cities bite into imported Australian apples
where professionals with engineering degrees
sell credit cards to Americans
and polishitians with no shame
are bribed with whores and suitcases of money

Sure.
Vietnam can become like India.

you think you have seen india, mr. gates? come with me then.
