Bush Faces Dissent From Republicans on Climate Change
Bush Faces Dissent From Republicans on Climate Change (Update1)

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Bob Inglis, a South Carolina Republican, says he ``pooh-poohed'' global warming until he trekked to the South Pole in January.

``Now, I think we should be concerned,'' says Inglis, who heads the U.S. House Science Research subcommittee. ``There are more and more Republicans willing to stop laughing at climate change who are ready to get serious about reclaiming their heritage as conservationists.''

U.S. companies including General Electric Co. and Duke Energy Corp. have come out in support of national limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions that scientists say contribute to global warming. They are now being joined by Republican lawmakers who have parted company with President George W. Bush on the issue.

``As the evidence of global warming becomes undeniable, momentum is building to take action to cut greenhouse gas emissions,'' former Vice President Al Gore said in an e-mail. ``A lot of elected officials who used to reflexively oppose action on global warming have begun to change their positions.''

3. Nixon formed the EPA
just sayin'.

I realize that's ancient history--kinda like bringing up the Republicans' "heritage as civil rights advocates" -- but whatever gets them back on Planet Reality is ok in my book.

4. The question is, though.
Will they stay in reality after election season is over?

7. Probably not.

In this instance it's kinda like how a slice of bread from a loaf is better than no bread at all.

But anything that mainstreams the view that global warming and other ecological screwups are real, and not a figment of some mythical terra-lovin' gay-recruitin' Liberal's imagination is a good thing.

Even if it's just a slice.

5. It was one of the reason they "Watergated" him
Not saying he didn't have to go, just realized, the media was NEVER on our side - our interests just briefly converged that time.

9. All of your points - true
Even so, I’ve never felt that the GOP was in the least bit conservation-conscious.

Any advantages that could given to businesses, particularly in the areas of manufacturing by-products, has been granted and the GOP has always had open arms for manufacturing lobbyists.

It’s seems a lot like being a born again Christian of convenience: visible motions of conversion without a backing of faith.

for all of the sins you committed in your lifetime...And as far as global warming issues go...This guy sinned alot.

So are there any bills based on environment protection coming up that he can prove his change of heart by voing on?

I mean really bad. From an old article:

"THE "DIRTY BAKER'S DOZEN": The League of Conservation Voters added
Representative Bob Inglis (R-SC) to its "Dirty Dozen" list. LCV President Deb Callahan
cited his 15% environmental rating for 1998 as reason for the listing. Inglis voted to limit the public's right to know about toxic chemicals, fought new clean air protections, and sought to weaken the Clean Water Act. "South Carolina faces some real environmental challenges in the years ahead, should fire Bob Inglis for his anti-environmental record," said Callahan. "

---------------------------------------
Is Inglis' job up for grabs this year? I'd rather work on placing a Democrat in his spot rather than trusting this guy to suddenly having a change of heart...
