Hundreds of Greeks protest against planned visit by Rice
Hundreds of Greek leftists and peace activists held an anti-American march in central Athens on Monday, protesting a scheduled brief visit to Greece by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday.

The main roads, Vassilissis Sofias Avenue in front of the American Embassy in Greece and Amalias Avenue in front of the Sintagma Square and the Parliament building, were blocked by police from 6 p.m. (1400GMT) to prevent several planned demonstrations and marches by leftists and peace activists.

However, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) managed to put up a big poster reading "Rice Go Home" from the Magara Concert Hall, next to the American Embassy. Meanwhile, about 300 protesters marched towards the embassy shouting anti-American slogans, but were blocked by anti-riot police from approaching the embassy compound. <snip>

In a separate announcement, the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (SYN) condemned U.S. threat of the use of force on the Iran's nuclear issue, calling Rice a persona non grata.

The Greek Social Forum announced that it had called a demonstration in Athens and a march to the U.S. embassy on Tuesday morning. <snip>

Kind of fitting, sending the Ferragamo footed fascist a message.

She probably will advise Greek officials on how to set up free-speech zones somewhere in the middle of the Aegean Sea.

I am not happy with them throwing gas bombs, that is BAD! I am afraid someone will get killed. However, I do like the signage. I do not see any way in which bushco could benefit from this protest. Violent of otherwise. I have seen no reporting of this in US media only briefly on the BBC this morning.

19. Condi is the most hated woman in the world
"We are not protesting just against Rice, but the imperialist, war-mongering US government," school teacher Panayiotis Hiundis told Reuters.

<snip>

The US war in Iraq has triggered strong opposition in Greece. In addition, say commentators, many Greeks are still bitter at Washington for backing the right-wing military junta which ruled Greece between 1967 and 1974.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4941822.stm

The BBC reports that Condi is traveling to Turkey next. I am certain that our Turkish friends are rolling out a welcome mat for Condi that will make the Greek protests pale by comparison.

23. Well, Condi's "out" as a possible Cheney/Rumsfeld "replacement"
Why is it Shrub's Admin are all so deeply disliked worldwide?

Oh, in contrast...Kerry's roaring, standing-ovation reception over the weekend at his speech in Boston was SO well-received. The right man at the right time...with the right message." And he knew it! You could see it in the set of his jaw, and the steely glow of his baby blues.
