Shoshone fight "Divine Strake"

Western Shoshone winning converts
GOP Senator, shareholders offer support in crusades against Pentagon, mining company

Sam Lewin 4/25/2006

A Western tribe currently engaged in battles with two powerful opponents- the largest gold producer in the world and the Pentagon- - is now receiving moral and legal support from shareholders in the company involved in the former controversy and a Republican Senator concerned about the latter’s plan for a huge explosion.

The Western Shoshone tribe, which claims millions of acres in land spanning portions of four states, has already sued to prevent “Divine Strake,” a massive non-nuclear blast that the tribe worries could kick up radioactive matter still remaining in the region following a series of nuclear tests conducted over a forty-year period.

The tribe’s lawsuit, filed in federal court, names as defendants officials with the Defense Department, National Nuclear Security Administration and Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Blast planners have countered that their research shows there is no danger of nuclear fallout. Senator Orrin Hatch is not so sure. The Utah Republican has sent a letter to the federal government seeking to confirm that the test is safe. "The more I look into this, the more upset I become," Hatch said.

3. I've heard her mention it on the radio too
Good idea. Independent monitoring of harmful gases and radiation wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I would not be surprised if ChimpCo uses this as cover to test a low-yield nuclear device....

6. bringing masses of people into the detonation area is the most important
it amazes me that nobody has proposed that yet. Or do you have to be Mexican to take to the streets ?

11. Found this website with pretty extensive info on "Divine Strake"....
<http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/ops/divine-strake.htm>

QUOTE:

The DIVINE STRAKE full scale test is planned to be a large-yield, buried burst detonated at the Nevada Test Site. Divine Strake would appear to be associated with the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator RNEP, or possibly the B61-11 Earth-Penetrating Weapon, a fact that is obscured in most press coverage. Divine Strake is a high-explosive (HE) test sponsored by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The test is a detonation of a 700 ton buried heavy AN/FO charge above a tunnel structure. The main purpose of the test is to study ground shock effects on deeply buried tunnel structures. Of secondary interest is the airblast produced by a buried charge and its modification as it propagates over the local terrain. Scheduled for the summer of 2006, as of 01 April 2006 the test was planned for 02 June 2006.

DIVINE STRAKE is one of several "DIVINE" efforts under the Hard and Deeply Buried Target Defeat (HDBTD) program. DIVINE WARHAWK consists of deep underground operational tunnel facility defeat demonstrations using advanced weapons at the White Sands Missile Range. DIVINE HELCAT was a 2004 reconstitution exercise to determine reconstitution time for the C3I tunnel facility at Nevada Test Site (NTS). Also in 2004 planning began for DIVINE HATES, which is a WMD production and storage tunnel complex functional defeat effort.

No comment at all about the possibility of soil containing radioactive elements from the nuke testing of four decades ago being blasted into the atmosphere and drifting downwind.

15. "Buried?" Funny choice of words for an
open air explosion. They're digging a hole 30' x 36', dropping in the slurry, 300 lbs of C4 and igniting the whole mess.

The pre-approval doc even calls it an "open-air" blast.

grumble.

13. Temple of Sekhmet
There's a Temple of Sekhmet that's near the blast zone, too. It could very well be destroyed, or at least seriously damaged, by the blast. "Divine Strake" indeed.

That's so sad... regardless of how one believes oneself, spiritual sites should be protected.

One more evil thing to add to the ever-growing, cumbersome list of deadly deeds done by this despot!

20. i hate that name, divine strake. wtf does it mean?
divine: Having the nature of or being a deity.
Of, relating to, emanating from, or being the expression of a deity: sought divine guidance through meditation.
Being in the service or worship of a deity; sacred.
Superhuman; godlike.
Supremely good or beautiful; magnificent: a divine performance of the concerto.
Extremely pleasant; delightful: had a divine time at the ball.
Heavenly; perfect.

strake: A single continuous line of planking or metal plating extending on a vessel's hull from stem to stern.

??? planking or metal plating extending from stem to stern?

i think someone wanted to call it divine strike and they were over-ruled, turning it into jibberish (it was a typo, sir.)

21. If it's true that dimson is down to only four states giving him
a 50% or higher rating, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2589221
this blast will reduce that group by one.

Utah's "Down-winders" will probably bring about a revolt in that state. They've had it with being a testing ground.

22. Glad to see Hatch upset... but I would bet that in the end
he will roll over for his GOP masters (they want this test - precursor to more weapons to be made = more $$). I would guess that only a huge media bad PR blitz or the courts (thank you Western Shoshone tribe) can stop it from happening.
