Peace Action Grannies Found Innocent of Trying to Enlist
NEW YORK, April 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Eighteen grannies who were arrested in front of a military recruitment station in Times Square, New York on October 17, 2005 were found innocent today. The grannies, who call themselves the "Granny Peace Brigade," were trying to enlist in the military in order to prevent younger men and women from dying in the Iraq war. They were arrested for blocking the entrance to the recruiting station, handcuffed and jailed for over four hours. If found guilty, the grannies would have faced 15 days behind bars.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Neal Ross found that the grannies in fact did not block the entrance and that they were wrongly arrested.

Five of these grannies, aged 59 to 91 are active members of Peace Action, the largest peace group in the U.S with nearly 100,000 members. These brave grannies' names are Carol Husten, Lillian Rydel, Barabra Walker, Susan Nickerson of New York and Dr. Patricia Salomon of Maryland.

Said former chair of Peace Action New York State, Carol Husten, "we are not guilty, our government is guilty of getting us into an illegal, immoral Iraq war."

The grannies plan to march together this Saturday, April 29, in the march for peace justice and democracy in New York City. Those who can walk will; the others will march in wheelchairs.

5. Thank you, Judge Neal Ross
for letting the light of truth shine through.

To the grannies - I'd be "marching" in my w/c right beside you if I could. I've done it before in a crowd of 30,000 in Portland, but I'm on the left coast and no longer fly.

7. If they were "wrongly arrested"....
the grannies should get a hotshot law firm to sue the bastards pro bono.

If the grannies had been found guilty, they would have had to pay. The whole weight of government was put into prosecuting them. Our justice system isn't balanced ( Yeah... I know!) if the government doesn't have to pay for their screwup.

Let a jury decide whether those poor little frail grannies should be compensated for their suffering. Considering the makeup of juries .... mostly seniors these days... the prosecution might get their hands slapped.

9. I didn't know you could sue the Government.
I like your idea of the government having to pay for their wrong doing. I just don't understand all the formalities of how these prosecutors work. Here in Wisconsin, a guilty verdict was given to four men who slashed the Republican car tires. They all will be given jail time. Two weeks earlier, a non guilty verdict for, three off duty Milwaukee police who were accused of being responsible for a horrible beating were given no jail time. It does not seem like a balanced system.
