Pennsylvania Senate: Casey by 13 points (Rasmussen)
April 27, 2006--Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum (R) retains his title as the nation's most vulnerable incumbent for Election 2006. The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in the Keystone State shows Santorum trailing Democrat Bob Casey by 13 percentage points, 51% to 38% (see crosstabs).

For the challenger, that's slightly better than our March 29 poll which showed him leading 50% to 41%. Casey has been ahead in all seven of our Pennsylvania election polls by margins ranging from nine to twenty percentage points.

Santorum is struggling with his base, consistently earning less than 70% of the vote from Pennsylvania Republicans. He's at 65% support from the GOP in the current poll. Casey, on the other hand, is supported by 77% of Democrats.

Just 25% of all voters have a "very favorable" opinion of Rick Santorum while 24% have a "very unfavorable" opinion of him.

5. So does your Catholic school, Boston College support choice?
Didn't think so, but you support it with your tuition. I'm sure you have good reasons for going to a Catholic school, despite the Church's position on abortion. (My brother and nephew are both BC grads and both are pro-choice.) Well, we in Pennsylvania who are pro-choice have very many excellent reasons for supporting Bob Casey, Jr., and they all have to with the overwhelming need to get the GOP out of the majority in the Senate. We choose from the candidates on the ballot. And if you can't see the vast difference between Santorum and Casey, you have not been paying attention.

6. The university itself is progressive, the adminstration is in the stoneage
Do keep in mind that the Jesuits are the most liberal branch of Catholicism. The faculty is almost entirely pro-choice--except CSOM, of course (the business school).
But that's besides the case-- over the past year, there has simply been no excuse to support anyone who is anti-choice. Period.

7. Well if you keep a GOP Senate majority, they can get another SC appointee

or two and then we will be faced with decades of anti-abortion decisions.
Your absolute position is not tenable if you can look at all the ramifications of getting rid of Santorum. You do realize, don't you, that his ultimate goal is the presidency? So between the SC and the office of President and a continuing GOP Senate majority, and the impact of each of those on the push to overthrow Roe v. Wade, there are three extremely critical reasons to get rid of Santorum. Then throw in the fact that Santorum has a huge campaign fund, and Casey is the only Dem candidate willing to take him on who has a shot at winning. So there you have four "excuses to support anyone who is anti-choice." I've worked in the political arena for the last 13 years, and I'm telling you that you don't get absolute victories overnight. You work away at them year after year, piece by piece. The net sum of a Casey victory is GOOD for the pro-choice forces.

As to the Jebbies, I went to Marquette, long ago. Over the years I have been very disappointed at their inability to effectively counter the conservatives controlling the College of Cardinals.

8. oh I know all the reasons
Trust me, I know.
But I've become so jaded over the past four years seeing the Democrats do next to goddamn nothing-- there is no motivation for me to fight for the party when they do not fight for me or the rest of the country that has been so exploited and damaged by the GOP.
Right now, I'm running on principles--and I can't get over this.
I know the reasons. And maybe I should want him to win. But I can't right now.

10. I understand how you feel - sometimes I feel the same.
But I got a real boost to my energy level when just two weeks ago, I worked really hard on a special election and for the first time in over 40 years we elected a Democrat to represent us in the State Legislature. Now I'm working on the primary for US Congress for an excellent woman candidate, Georgia Berner, whom I think could beat GOP Rep. Melissa Hart in the fall. And I personally worked with Bob Casey & his extremely honest staff when he was Auditor General - on issues re the mentally retarded and autistic kids. He did a kickass job at protecting them from some privatized predators foisted on the state by the GOP majority in the PA House & Senate. So I know he is not one of these anti-choice hypocrites who doesn't care about kids AFTER they are born.

It's late. Shouldn't you be hitting the books, kiddo?
