8. God Bless Alex and Vanessa during this time
My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Here's a little tribute Vanessa gave their dad AND mom during her speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention:

"People ask why Alex and I are so close to our dad _ especially since he loved to mortify us when we were little by showing up to our sports games in a bright orange hunting hat and cheered what seemed just a tad too loudly. As I've thought about it, I realize it is because he and our mother have given us great gifts: a willing ear, unwavering respect for our choices, and unconditional love."

14. Julia Thorne, Sen. Kerry's ex-wife, dies
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Julia Thorne, the ex-wife of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, died Thursday after a long battle with cancer, a Kerry spokesman confirmed to CNN.

Thorne, 61, was an author who overcame depression. She had separated from the Massachusetts senator just as his political career began a sharp upward trajectory. She chose instead to cede the spotlight to Kerry, and eventually moved to Montana with her second husband, Richard Charlesworth.

18. Sincere condolences to the family
and Sen. Kerry. Even though they were divorced, I'm sure he is also suffering a loss, along with his daughters.

May she rest in peace.

19. Yes, they seemed to manage an amicable divorce
and I know she endorsed him in 2004. The right went to her to dig up dirt and got a big surprise.

Amicable divorces do exist. I know because I had one.

20. My thoughts (and condolences) exactly. When one is divorced,
that does NOT end the feelings and experiences shared (ESPECIALLY if children bond your memories and continued contact). There is "something" about one's first young love...and the memories he and Julia shared through such young, formative years in both their lives.

(BOTH their daughters DO resemble her. Certainly "Alex" more, but still both do.) My heartfelt sympathy to JK AND his daughters, AND Julia...that she did not live long enough to see him Prez one day soon.

My deepest sadness at the 'loss.' Julia appears to have been such a lovely person...and though somehow chose instead a reclusive life, her affection for John (I sense) continued through the years.

Today, as many here at DU, I feel great grief for JK. And send my "supportive" thoughts to his family.

21. Yes...
apparently they remained friends after the divorce. Though not unheard of, in my experience it is unusual, and says a lot about the characters of both partners.

I'm sure she will be sadly missed by all members of her family, and certainly by John. My heart goes out to them all.

22. So sad. She was a beautiful and articulate woman.
I remember when she talked to reporters about an incident when a rock was thrown through their window, during one of Kerry's campaigns, and thrown dangerously close to one of her daughter's cribs. She told the story so well...so poised. She was obviously a woman who had the ability to care very deeply, and to love.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families.
