Vatican calls for boycott of Da Vinci Code
Italy to remove 'Da Vinci Code' ad from church scaffolding

By Marta Falconi
ASSOCIATED PRESS

6:14 a.m. April 25, 2006

ROME – The Interior Ministry said Tuesday it would remove a poster promoting “The Da Vinci Code” movie from the scaffolding of a Rome church undergoing renovation after its clergymen complained, officials said Tuesday.

The enormous poster, featuring a picture of Da Vinci's “Mona Lisa” and the title of the upcoming film, has been plastered for a few weeks on the scaffolded facade of the church of St. Pantaleo, which is located just off a major thoroughfare in Rome's historic center.

The Rev. Marco Fibbi, a spokesman for Rome's Vicariate, said the poster was “causing a problem.”
“This movie is not reputed to be particularly appreciated by ecclesiastic circles,” Fibbi said.

Church officials have spoken out repeatedly against the best-selling novel by Dan Brown...

2. I thought this book was fiction
Why would the Church care about a work of fiction? Don't they have anything better to do?

3. best of luck to the Vatican
but, what I think this call will accomplish is that people will want to see just what they are calling to boycott.

4. I agree. This will increase the boxoffice interest.
As the previous poster said. This is a work of fiction. Why should they be so interested in keeping people from seeing a movie that is based on a work of fiction?

21. Where's the Legion of Decency when they're really needed?
When I was growing up Catholic, the Legion of Decency rated films, A, B, or (shudder) C -- C for "condemned." We were told that it was a mortal sin to see a C film. Sounds like the Vatican would like to make this move "The Da Vinci C." ;-)

13. Exactly my thoughts as well
There must be something there that hits too close to the truth! I'm a Catholic and I think that. (although at the moment an a la carte, non church going one)

7. Thou doust protest too much
Catholic church is only giving free publicity to this movie.

The question is...what is the church really hiding? Why do they find the movie so offensive? Obviously this isn't the only film to attack the church.

10. Shouldn't the Church be strong enough.....
to withstand the onslaught of a piece of popular culture that will be forgotten in a year?

Where's their faith--in their doctrine and in their followers?

15. I think they're hiding Opus Dei
I thought that the book was fun to read, but the main thing that struck me was the existence of Opus Dei which I, as a lifelong (apparently head-in-the-sand) Catholic knew absolutely nothing about. It not only horrified me, I was even more shocked to find that there were a number of fairly well-known and influential people who were members (Scalia, Santorum, Tom Monaghan, etc.) Forget the sacred feminine and the Knights Templar. I'll bet they're even getting leaned on by Opus Dei.

17. Italy to remove 'Da Vinci Code' ad from church scaffolding
This is the headline on the article; not what you have posted.

One Cardinal called for a boycott last year.

This is misleading. I think you still have time to correct your subject line.

18. KC2 - Please change the subject line of your post to read:
"Italy to remove 'Da Vinci Code' ad from church scaffolding".

LBN rules state that the article title and the subject line must be the same.
You have one hour from the time of posting to edit.

Thank you

20. When they go so far trying to 'debunk' a work of fiction, ...
one wonders just how much of what they're protecting they fully realize to be bunk.

If they were wise, and confident, they'd say something like: "This is only a work of fiction."

23. In the worlds of my late great English Professor
Dr. Haas (Who was Catholic)

"I remember when we would always receive lists from our church . . . lists of movies that have been deemed improper, impure, wrong, bankrupted or something like that and that it would be a sin to go to them. So naturally they be the first ones we go to cause they looked the most fun."
