Police get ready for massive immigration march (Chicago)

April 28, 2006 - A huge rally is planned for Monday in Chicago on immigrant rights and reform. Several-hundred-thousand people are expected to march and police are already preparing for the crowd. Congress has been debating whether to crackdown on illegal immigrants or embrace them as vital contributors to the US economy. <snip>

This is coming together much like the march a month ago, when 10,000 protesters were expected and 100,000 showed up. Chicago police said Thursday they had ramped up security and traffic plans to accommodate about 300,000. But march organizers said they were expecting 500,000 or more, and late Friday afternoon, Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline acknowledged that the crowd could hit the 500,000 mark.

"That's what I'm hearing from some of the organizers it could be," Cline said. <snip>
