OTTAWA (CP) - Allegations of illegal eavesdropping by U.S. spies prompted pointed questions from the federal watchdog who oversees their Canadian counterparts, newly released records reveal.

Correspondence obtained by The Canadian Press shows the public controversy about U.S. National Security Agency spying on American citizens led to a series of highly classified exchanges in Ottawa.

John Adams, chief of the ultra-secret Communications Security Establishment, was forced to respond to detailed inquiries spanning two months from the office of Antonio Lamer, the former Supreme Court chief justice who, as CSE commissioner, serves as watchdog over the spy outfit.

Portions of the correspondence, including even the security classifications stamped on the letters, were blacked out due to the information's sensitivity

3. Give it up. The internet is owned and run by servers in the USA. Relax.
Not the end of the world. I don't need to see another plane go into a building. And if the internet not being private is the price I pay so that illegal gangs of all kinds cannot communicate freely over the internet.. I'm fine with that. Just so long as there is some sorta legal framework for warrants in the USA. That is the most important thing.

4. "some sorta legal framework for warrants " - well under Bush EVERYTHING
.
.
.

can be made "legal"

sorry

but I don't trust the USA government one weenie bit . . .

That's why, despite my affection for many USA citizens, and the geography - I do not intend to ever leave my country again

I now live in Northern Ontario, HAD planned to spend my retirement years - and MONEY in southern California

but the USA just ain't worth the risk IMO

I'll stay right up here thank you very much

5. I agree their needs to be oversight in congress for what exactly is
being viewed. I agree NSA is a scandal. For Americans. There need to be warrants. And policy that can see some oversight in who and what is looked at all over the world.

This lot is not trustworthy. For sure they would try and multch the line between political discussion and criminal discussion.

Why we need to fight for warrants.

P.S. did you hear Colbert's take on it all?

At the Dinner - Colbert: "If you need anything just speak clearly into your table number and someone from NSA will be over with a cocktail in a few minutes". (or something like that).

And least we can laugh while we are crying.
