Poll: Gas Prices, Iraq Weigh Down Bush (CBS 33% Approval)
(CBS) With gas prices sky-high and no end of the Iraq war in sight, President George W. Bush's approval rating hits an all-time low in a new CBS News poll.

Only 33 percent approve of his job performance, Mr. Bush's lowest approval rating yet in CBS News polls. A majority – 58 percent of those polled – say they disapprove of the president. Mr. Bush appears to be losing support from his own party. His approval rating among Republicans has dropped to 68 percent.

2. This really depresses me.
I was hoping it would be 22% by now. I'll have to wait a little longer. He should give more speeches and keep those numbers sliding.

8. After we retake the House and the investigations start...
...you'll get your 22%. George W. Nixon's ass will be grass.

3. I think we are near the bottom of where he is going
If he ate a nursury full of babies then ran over a group of baby seals with a steam roller, his idiot base would either claim the Clenis defense or claim that we "hate Murka" because we didn't him do it on TV. I am not being sarcastic here. I think they would actually do something like that.

4. I think you are correct
I don't think, barring something unexpected, that he will fall under 30%. I think there is a third of the country who will support him no matter what. I hope I'm wrong. The next months will tell.

6. Well, maybe.........but maybe not.
Give those 30-percenters another 5 months to think it over. Samuel Bodman just let the guillotine fall.....he said there would be "no breaks" in the price of gas.

Let those LOYAL Bush fans keep forking it over at the pump.....

18. Mehlman was saying that last November--
that * had finally bottomed out (I assume he was thinking of the Katrina effect). Little did he know about the upcoming troubles--Dubai ports deal, NSA illegal wiretaps, and now gas prices. Each thing that comes "home to roost" will inch * a little lower. It has a cumulative effect now.

7. Right about one-third seems to be about the bottom.
Maybe just a LITTLE lower. Nixon's ratings bottomed out at 27% in November of '73, which was nine months before he resigned. And right now Bush, at 32-33%, is within the margin of error of matching his father's lowest ratings of (IIRC) 29%. Seems to be a constant that about one-third of the American public will support the President no matter what.

12. This is an unprecidented situation
GWB can't be compared to past presidents, not even Nixon.

Watergate, by contrast, looks like a harmless prank. And almost no one disputes that Nixon, whether you agreed with him or not, was a very capable executive. GWB is not just criminal to an unprecented degree, he is incompetent. You can always find fans of criminality, but no one likes an incompetent.

He'll level out in the 20s, or even high teens.

That is, assuming he isn't driven out before he finally levels out. The anger that is building against him is deep and broad and intense and not likely to be reversible. Even if gas stations started paying citizens to fill their tanks, people would only wonder what scheme he was up to again. Even if there was another attack, or if we attack some other nation, people would blame him for the violence rather than rally round him. If he finds Osama bin Ladin, people would wonder what took him so long and what ulterior reason did he have for finding now. He has not just lost his credibility, he is seen as a liar of the very worst sort.

I do not think the Great Decider will finish his second term. He will either be impeached and convicted, or forced to resign, whether or not Congress cooperates with the citizens in accomplishing his expulsion. No ruler can govern in spite of the active opposition of the great majority of the people.

9. TOo bad breaking 750 laws isn't as important as gas prices
as soon as the price of gas goes down, we can forget all about treason, murder, perjury, and all the other high crimes.

Man, this country is in BAAAAAAAD shape.

13. A lot of us are already gone
Do keep in mind that he and his ilk have already driven many of us out of our party.

That should be read as 68% of the remaining Republicans. Or in other words, 32% of the Republicans still trying to ride this train wreck can't stand him.

I don't have references in front of me, but I do know recent polls substantiate this: there's been a decline in the number of persons who identify themselves as Republicans, and an increase in self-identified Democrats.

14. I think it's been a drip drip drip
While some of his disasters have been spectacular, I think the drip drip drip of the less spectacular incidents and scandals are significantly contributing to his fall in the polls.

I can't wait till Plamegate gets the full attention it deserves. When I've explained to ordinary people exactly what Bush did -- expose a CIA spy network and endanger, perhaps even kill, our agents abroad -- their blood boils. Right or left, all loyal Americans know what a traitor is.

I too have doubts that Bush will finish out his second term. The growing dissatisfaction among the sheep will drive him out of office.
