Immigrants flex clout in US rallies
Tue May 2, 2006 3:39 AM BST
By Jill Serjeant and Dan Whitcomb

... Los Angeles police estimated a throng of up to 250,000 people during a noon demonstration at City Hall and 400,000 at a later rally near the La Brea Tar Pits ... Recent polls show only 30 percent of Americans advocate tougher laws for illegals ... In Chicago, more than 300,000 people marched ... Demonstrations unfolded in Denver, Houston and San Francisco and thousands marched in Mexico in solidarity ... http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=worldNews&storyID=2006-05-02T023908Z_01_N30434140_RTRUKOC_0_UK-USA-IMMIGRATION.xml

21. Truthily, the reaction seems to be negative. But, the alternative
which is saying nothing, is unacceptable.

The was a sign carried nation wide that really impressed me: "Today we march, tomorrow we vote."

There were many legal residents and citizens marching in those protests. They know they've had a turnout problem in the past. Looks like they're about to fix that. No wonder Washington is scared sh!tless.

4. 1M Immigrants Skip Work for Demonstration
LOS ANGELES - More than 1 million mostly Hispanic immigrants and their supporters skipped work and took to the streets Monday, flexing their economic muscle in a nationwide boycott that succeeded in slowing or shutting many farms, factories, markets and restaurants.

From Los Angeles to Chicago, Houston to Miami, the "Day Without Immigrants" attracted widespread participation despite divisions among activists over whether a boycott would send the right message to Washington lawmakers considering sweeping immigration reform.

"We are the backbone of what America is, legal or illegal, it doesn't matter," said Melanie Lugo, who with her husband and their third-grade daughter joined a rally of some 75,000 in Denver. "We butter each other's bread. They need us as much as we need them."

<snip>

In all, police departments in more than two dozen U.S. cities contacted by The Associated Press gave crowd estimates that totaled about 1.1 million marchers.

13. Yeah, a shitty one at that...
Long story short, my mother in law, got fired, because she went to her diabetic appointment. My wife, tried getting the Union to help her mother out, they refused. So my wife, had to take up her mothers claim, got shit rolling, and within 8 months, my wife got Tyson to pay a settlement, and rehire her mother, with all her benefits, and vacation/retirement and all that. When the situation was taken care of the union wanted to do a little "photo op" and make it seem like the Union got my mother in law, her job back. My wife told the Union to go take a flying leap...Yeah, go unions...:(

22. Exactly! BTW illegals are not immigrants. My ancestors were immigrants
because they waited in line to come here. And they came from a poverty stricken horrible place also. I want immigration not illegals.

I can't find a link for it, but tonight on KSN news, the NBC Affilate out of Joplin, MO, they stated that the Noel, MO plant was closed today. Also in my copy of McDonald County Press, just can't find a link online to save my life...

10. to be honest with you
I'm not exactly certain as to what my position is on this entire thing. Which side of the coin do I choose? I see both sides, for I am from a family of immigrants as are most/many in the USA. Why is immigration such a huge issue all of a sudden I ask?

My answer is simple: A very fine distraction from reality.

and in the meantime, nothing changes for those involved while might I suggest that plans for "something else" is in the works ... ?

Naw, lets worry about those damn immigrants ... :sarcasm:
