US missionary, 70, accused of sodomy in Kenya

NAIROBI (Reuters) - A Kenyan court charged a 70-year-old Catholic missionary from the United States on Tuesday with sodomy in a Nairobi park.

"I am not guilty," Andre Hotchkiss told the court.

Police said Hotchkiss committed an "unnatural offence" with a man on April 9 in Uhuru Park in downtown Nairobi. Homosexuality is outlawed in Kenya, as in many parts of Africa.

The complainant, Paul Gathogo Kamau, an unemployed 33-year-old, told the court he wanted to withdraw the case after realizing the accused was "a man of God."

10. True. The "missionary position" would have benn more in keeping with
his occupational designation. ... But maybe at 70, that position was not working anymore.

6. That's a backdoor love affair, not a crime
Enter by the narrow gate, just as Jesus said.

7. "While there may be no peace for the wicked. . .
Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:15 AM by DinahMoeHum
the righteous can always get a piece whenever they feel like it."

- from the graphic novel "V for Vendetta"

All jokes aside, I'll suspend "judgement" as there is probably more to this story.

12. I guess priestly abuse isn't just an "american" catholic issue
I still say that the church could avoid a lot of these issues by letting their priests get married and ordaining women. Considering over 90% of all sex offenders are male....

But, this is america, and no one is required to be a catholic once they are over 18. If catholics want to clean up their church, it's up to them to do it, not the rest of us.

13. I am in no position to determine quilt in this case but I do know
that the church often sends abusers to poorer communities (ghetto, reservation, mission field) to hide them rather than face the scandal that would erupt over the truth. It has been the way that it was handled in the past. With a total lack of care for the poor or their children.
