U.S. confident of Iran sanctions
The U.S. diplomat heading crucial talks on Iran's nuclear ambitions has predicted full European support for a U.N. Security Council resolution that would allow sanctions or even force.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's meeting in Paris, Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told CNN that backing from France, Britain and Germany would see the implementation of a key U.N. resolution.

"I think you will see a serious Chapter 7 resolution emerge in the next couple of days at the United Nations," he said.

A resolution under the U.N. Charter's Chapter 7 makes any demands mandatory and paves the way for the use of sanctions and possibly force.

17. Not so much anymore
There would be a world-wide economic slowdown, but with the gas and oil deals China and India (the two largest growing economies in the world) are making, they will be protected.

Latin American countries are protecting themselves by making trade deals with each other based upon barter and not U.S. currency.

5. Read this carefully: "predicted full European support"
Russia and China are not Europe, and they do not support sanctions.

If Bush imposes sanctions, it will be without U.N. Security Council approval.

And that's illegal.

7. I think they will
The rightwing government wants to mend ties with Bush and will go along with sanctions.

Also, Germany does very little trade with Iran so it won't hurt them.,

11. I don't believe this will have any bearing on Germany's decision
Unlike Bush, China and Russia put politics aside when it comes to economic prosperity.

I don't see Russia or China putting political pressure on Germany over an economic deal, it doesn't make sense.

Russia and China hold all the cards and don't need to put pressure on anyone.

12. UN Security Council Membership in 2006
http://www.un.org/sc/members.asp

The Council is composed of five permanent members — China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States — and ten non-permament members (with year of term's end):
Argentina (2006)
Congo (Republic of the) (2007)
Denmark (2006)
Ghana (2007)
Greece (2006)
Japan (2006)
Peru (2007)
Qatar (2007)
Slovakia (2007)
United Republic of Tanzania (2006)

So Germany does not (directly) count, I think.

15. Not directly, but they count to Bush
Whether it's to try to show Bush has a coalition to support sanctions, or a coalition to support the use of force.

8. Exactly, leaving out Russia and China in his certainty of support
means they know one or both will veto the call for sanctions. The US will not have Britain on board this time if they even suggest military force, Blair is a lame duck and his party wants him gone, preferably yesterday, imo.
