BAGHDAD, May 2, 2006 (UPI) -- Sectarian divisions among Iraqi Shiite and Sunni Muslims have permeated the ranks of army recruits, with some Sunnis refusing to serve outside home areas.
The most recent evidence was Sunday night in an event caught by Arabic television at Camp Habbaniyah, a base about 45 miles west of Baghdad, The Washington Post reported.
A class of 978 new Iraqi soldiers was graduating, the majority of them Sunnis. Soon after taking the oath of allegiance, dozens of angry troops began tearing off their uniforms and throwing them to the parade ground, vowing not to leave their home area.

The governor of Anbar, Mamoun Sami Rasheed, later told reporters he tried to make the recruits understand that serving in the army is a great honor, regardless of where the service might be, because it is a service for the whole country.
