US general urged "outer limits" Iraq interrogation (Sanchez)
US general urged "outer limits" Iraq interrogation
By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander in Iraq during the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal urged U.S. forces to "go to the outer limits" to extract information from prisoners, according to a U.S. officer cited in a military document.

The Army last year exonerated Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez of wrongdoing relating to detainee abuse, but human rights lawyers said the document raises fresh questions about the degree to which senior officers sanctioned the abuse.

"This is evidence that raises additional questions about the role of Lt. Gen. Sanchez in authorizing and endorsing the abuse of prisoners," Jameel Jaffer, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, said on Tuesday.

The May 19, 2004 Defense Intelligence Agency document was among more than 100,000 pages of files turned over by the government to the ACLU under court order as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

...

"The people were encourage (sic) to go to the outer limits to get information from the detainees by people who wanted the information," the document stated.

6. OMFG!
"Outer Limits" is morally depraved beyond belief.

IMO, a war crime type mentality. :grr:

8. I don't think...
... Rod Serling, a visionary writer IMHO, was involved in the Outer Limits. He was involved in The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. :)

10. You are right, sendero
Sorry for having smeared Rod Serling's memory by equating his shows to Sanchez's head. For that matter, the Outer Limits was a good show too, and nothing like the horror show that is Sanchez's brain.

15. I liked the Showtime version quite a bit!
They recycled some of the old stories. I haven't seen a new episode in years.

3. Sanchez was an insane f**kwit. Who didn't know that? In fact, who was
stupid enough to think he had nothing to do with what went on?

9. Someone will have to unravel
the cover-up of the cover-up of the cover-up on this whole sordid mess. In the meantime, the military will simply punish a "few bad apples" at the bottom of the barrel and maybe a token mid-level scarificial lamb. "Outer limits torture." Now that`s something to be proud of.

11. Yup. We "conspiracy theorists" were right all-along
Edited on Tue May-02-06 07:42 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
The official hypothesis that these were the actions of a "few bad apples" of enlisted rank never squared well with us consiracy theorists. But everyone had to go along with the official story (present company excluded) and pretend we are really a "good" nation after-all.

Delusion comes at a terrible price.

I say it is about time we got some justice.

20. The "limits" probably discouraged mutilation...
...you know, for "deniability".

Unfortunately, the Iraqi death squads don't have that constraint.

18. BushCo promotes asswipes like Sanchez.
And retires high caliber generals like Shinseki.

Merit doesn't count in the corrupt Bush Corporate cabal. Only loyalty matters.

And they wonder why we compare them to the Nazis.

him to do!! Evil is too good a word for them. They have destroyed the military's image around the world, and this country has no moral authority anymore. We have become a pariah!!
