Crumbling dike threatens south Florida (Reuters)
(No offense intended to out S. Florida members, but I'm just SO sick of Jeb Bush whining for Federal Funds when ever he figures out something in his State needs a-fixin'. Get in line Jeb, LA and CA asked first.)

Crumbling dike threatens south Florida

Tue May 2, 2006 07:08 PM ET

By Michael Peltier

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Even a weak hurricane can overwhelm the leaky and crumbling dike around Florida's massive Lake Okeechobee, putting more than 40,000 people in "imminent danger," state officials said on Tuesday.

With hurricane season less than a month away, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush urged the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to speed restoration of the dike, while the state scrambles to protect against what the governor said was a one-in-six chance the dike would fail in a direct hit from a hurricane.

"The first thing that needs to be done is get a commitment to fortify the dike," Bush said at a news conference. "Secondly, we need to adjust our evacuation plans for the region."

He ordered state emergency managers to put together an evacuation plan for inland residents living near the south rim of Lake Okeechobee -- the second-largest freshwater body in the United States after Lake Michigan.

1. Maybe second largest in area.......
certainly not in volume of water. Lake Okeechobee isn't that deep, probably an average depth of 15 feet, maybe.

10. Nope June 1st it starts, but most of the storms start in August and...
...September.

And it is predicted to be a bad year again.

The May forecast comes out in about 2 or 3 days, but so far, the Jan, Feb, and April Forecasts have said at least as bad as last year, if not a little worst.

This website has been getting more and more accurate over the years: <http://tsr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/>

11. Nope, June 1st.
August is typically when they really kick in. At least it was before the weather turned surly.

17. Jeb!: Category #5 Asshat
Jeb! wants people to believe he's more loyal to Florida than he is to
George W., Jeb! sees future photo ops in this scenario, and Jeb!
is too stupid to understand that waiting until May is another
slap in the face to the people of Florida.
