Democratic Congressman Wins Nomination In Ohio (Strickland)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland has handily won the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor.

The win in Tuesday's primary signals the party's best chance in years to regain control of bellwether Ohio amid an investment scandal that has swept through the Republican-controlled state.

With two precincts reporting, Strickland had 1,023 votes -- or 84 percent. State Representative Bryan Flannery had 197 votes.

Strickland in the fall will face the winner of an as-yet-undecided Republican primary between Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and Attorney General Jim Petro.

4. Each precinct has a demographic profile. If even a few hundred votes from
that precinct reflect the traditional profile, they often can project the percentages to a frighteningly accurate degree.

For instance, if a Republican candidate for Ohio's gubernatorial race ordinarily polls over 60% in a given precinct in Cincinnati, and the first few hundred votes reflect that the percentage is over that, the precinct profile is realized & they often call an early projection.

If the same Republican in the same precinct is running at 54% for those first few hundred votes, they'll wait until a more definitive reading of the precinct comes in.

If the count is nearer to 50%, they sense a cliffhanger and will not project at all. Those are the races that say, "Still too close to call..." and often the last few hundred votes determines the winner.

When politicians re-draw, or gerrymander voting districts, the first thing they look at (after their pocketbooks) is the precinct and district profiles that would be of greatest advantage to their candidacies.

2. How can they be reporting now when a judge ordered them not to
Edited on Tue May-02-06 08:28 PM by mtnester
until after 9:30?

A court has ordered a precinct in Cuyahoga County to remain open until 9:30 p.m. The Secretary of State's office, therefore, will not report results until after all polling locations are closed.

5. Sounds like the problem is on the Republican side. Blackwell's race.

The Democratic primary didn't need that county to make a difference in the call.

Maybe there is cheating going on in the Repug primary?

3. Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland handily won the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor on Tuesday, signaling the party's best chance in years to regain control of bellwether Ohio amid an investment scandal that has swept through the GOP-controlled state. In early results, Strickland had 90 percent of the vote.

Strickland in the fall will face the winner of an as-yet-undecided Republican primary between Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and Attorney General Jim Petro. The state delayed release of results when polls closed, after a county judge ordered one precinct to stay open late because of voting problems earlier in the day.

The pair is competing for the job of term-limited Gov. Bob Taft, a Republican, whose rein has been marred by scandal and record-low popularity ratings in the bellwether state.

Democrats, who haven't produced a governor for 16 years, have been energized by the woes of Taft and his party. They united quickly and aggressively behind Strickland and his running mate, former Attorney General Lee Fisher, in order to maximize his chances in November.
