Boston College faculty object to honorary degree for Rice
BOSTON --Nearly 100 faculty members at Boston College have signed a letter objecting to the college's decision to award Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice an honorary degree.

...

The theology department said nearly 100 have signed it, but declined to release their names, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Rice was announced Monday as commencement speaker for the May 22 ceremonies. Hollenbach said he has no objection to Rice being a speaker, but said she does not deserve an honorary degree.

"On the levels of both moral principle and practical moral judgment, Secretary Rice's approach to international affairs is in fundamental conflict with Boston College's commitment to the values of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions and is inconsistent with the humanistic values that inspire the university's work," the letter said.

"DEMOCRACY" (whatever the Fuck that means)

22. The Jesuits are the best
I consider myself a Jesuit Catholic. Never afraid to question anything. When TIME came out with the magazine cover asking "Is God Dead?", they were the only ones who wanted to talk about it.

23. the jesuits on campus are routinely censored/silenced
Many are with the student body on GLBT issues AND the Raytheon issue (BC admins allows Raytheon, a weapons developer, to recruit on campus). Sadly, they do not have much weight to the administration, which cares only about $$$$$.

Do NOT worry-- we are PROTESTING and she WILL be shamed for being the war-mongering shrew she is.

For shame, BC. If it wasn't Raytheon on campus, if it wasn't the blatant homophobia of the administration, this surely tops it. :grr:

I'm a Junior. If she was my year's commencement speaker, I'd 1)turn my back to her 2)refuse to touch/acknowledge
The President of BC is a war profiteer and a homophobe. He's really making BC go back to the middle ages on cultural issues :(

20. They have a point
Honorary degrees are usually given to people who have achieved something important.

What, exactly has Condoleezza Rice done to deserve such an honor?

Indeed, her term as National Security Advisor was noted for her failure to do anything about the attacks on 9/11, despite clear, direct and specific warnings.

As Secretary of State, she's done nothing remarkable. Her visits abroad have all been vigorously protested and she's made several inflammatory statements to countries that haven't helped endear the US to the international community.

She has been a consistent defender of the administration, including some of the worst aspects of their actions, such as the illegal invasion of Iraq, illegal detention and torture of foreign nationals (a clear violation of the Geneva Convention).

What, exactly, has Dr. Condoleeza Rice achieved?

Or the Board of Trustees. All of which are extremely retrograde conservative and frequently act against the student body and faculty's wishes.

28. Way to go.
Decry a degree ceremony that would compromise the college's moral stances without trying to silence Rice as a speaker. Hope the faculty pickets her.

performed prior to 9/11 this honorary degree is definitely NOT being awarded.

Generally a radical lay group, the Cardnial Neuman Society has fits with any sort of moderate that approaches any Catholic school (they are the self-appointed enforces of "Catholic" purity). Generally it is any Democrat or pro-choice person or with any pro-choice leanings in their background. They are now extending it to any to those who have any sympathy towards any homosexuals and the Vatican celibacy rule or male-only priest rule.
