Indiana Holocaust Museum Apparently Torched
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A fire destroyed a museum founded by a Holocaust survivor early Tuesday and arson is suspected, a museum official said. The fire was reported at the CANDLES Museum (search) just after midnight and gutted the building, a former printing plant along U.S. 41 south of the city's downtown.

"The police said there was a brick that had broken the main glass door, and they threw something in there that was an accelerant," said Mary Wright, the museum's education director. "Even the display cases were practically burned down to the ground."

. . .

CANDLES stands for Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Experiments Survivors. The museum was founded in 1995 by Holocaust survivor Eva Kor, Wright said. It houses artifacts from Auschwitz and documents relating to Dr. Josef Mengele (search). Wright said the museum had never received any threats.

"People think this doesn't happen in nice little places like Terre Haute, Indiana," she said. Kor and an identical twin sister were subjected to Mengele's genetic experiments at Auschwitz concentration camp.

15. Yep...
I remember well my trip through that part of Indiana, and among all my travels around the country that was one of only two times I felt AFRAID. I had stopped at a small town to fill up the tank and found myself suddenly surrounded by a bunch of sullen good ol' boys with confederate and racist symbols all over their trucks and a Stars and Bars flying on a pole over the station. Scared the piss outta me. I decided to drive elsewhere for gas. Never will forget that even though its been several years now... I couldn't believe I was in Indiana of all places. I think I saw more Confederate flags there than anyplace I'd been in the South.

5. This Is Depressing. Absolutely Depressing.
What in the hell is the matter with our society?

This goddamned administration does not "believe" there are hate crimes.

Let's see what John Ascroft has to say about this.

This is serious stuff, folks. Real serious.

We need leadership in this nation that sets the tone for tolerance and for understanding.

Sad.:(

7. I grew up in Terre Haute...
I knew Eva Kor, she is an amazing woman.
Unfortunately, the population of TH is the pinnacle of dichotomy.
Max Ehrmann, Eugene Debs, Paul Dresser and many other
brilliant minds came out of TH...however, the flip side is
that there IS a raging, thriving population of fascists there as well.
This, I take personally. What a terrible tragedy.
Blessings to Eva.

9. Just visited that museum six weeks ago
My girlfriend and I were in Terre Haute to visit her cousin and great aunt, we stopped by there but the museum closes early on saturdays. I'd like to smash the fascists that purpotrated this crime against a holocaust survivor.

14. McVeigh hated the government
He hated what we did in Iraq. He hated Waco. He hated the lies about the so-called American dream. I have no clue why someone would attach his name to burning a Holocaust museum. I can't recall him making any anti-Jew statements. This is just weird. And incredibly sad.
