A family's ordeal (Wife of jailed Gitmo chaplain speaks)
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 02:04 PM by Newsjock
Edit: Change title to "chaplain" -- thanks for catching the error

On Sept. 11, Huda Yee waited at Sea-Tac International Airport for five hours for a reunion that never happened.

... James never arrived. A day earlier, he'd been arrested at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, when he allegedly tried to fly home with classified information. As a Muslim and an Army chaplain, his job was counseling suspected al-Qaida and Taliban fighters who are detained at Camp X-Ray, the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

... Yee, petite, soft-spoken and unfailingly polite, is certain of one thing: her husband's innocence.

... It's been difficult. A visit to the Fort Lewis commissary made Yee feel unwelcome. Neighbors she waves to now ignore her.

Army investigators have visited and attempted to turn her against her husband, she said. They've told her, "You don't know the man you married," Nuriddin said.

1. Her husband is a chaplain not the translator
Man, this guy was working toward a Doctorate in Divinity when they met. Not a fly-by-night get-your-degree-by-mail type of preacher!

I am way too cynical about the government's motives here. I hope Huda Yee stays strong through this.

2. No such thing as "too cynical" when it comes to the US government
This administration in particular.

I have a hunch, nothing substantiated mind you, that Yee may have been targeted to prevent him from speaking out about the realities of life down at Gitmo.

4. Weren't two or three chaplains in hot water?
And weren't there chargest that Syria was trying to obtain information from Gitmo?

Reality Check: What information would Syria want from Gitmo; plants to build nuclear weapons?

It sounds to me like a chaplain(s) was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed at Gitmo, so he tried to smuggle some notes out, perhaps planning on going public or finding someone willing to publicize the information for him. He got caught, and the Republicans are sparing no effort in twisting the story and persecuting him.

Oops, I guess I'm rambling off into CONSPIRACY THEORY. Never mind!

5. I think you are right.
When he first was arrested, as my memory serves, he was accused of trying to take notes and maybe pictures out of Guitmo. It seemed to me then that he was trying to let the world know the conditions. Why wouldn't he? He is a minister.
