Sunshine brings British out to vote
It's local elections in Britain today, and the talk is of heads rolling in government if Labour does badly enough. Just thought you lot might want to know.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4970794.stm

Early signs suggest turnout will be above average in the local elections in England, as voters stream to polling stations in bright sunshine.

Some 144 English authorities and all 32 of London's boroughs are holding votes, as 4,360 council seats are contested.

Police officers are being deployed at several inner-city polling stations to prevent vote-rigging.

West Midlands Police said officers would be sent to Bordesley Green in Birmingham, where specialist electoral fraud investigators have uncovered alleged irregularities relating to 190 postal votes. Extra officers are also being deployed in Bradford, where police have launched an investigation into a "small number" of vote fraud claims.

1. Labour braced for heavy blow and 400 losses in local elections
Here's a Guardian article about the likely result. We will know tomorrow morning how good or bad it's been for Labour.

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/localelections2006/story/0,,1766928,00.html

Labour expects to lose 400 councillors and control of 15-16 councils across England in local elections today.

The figures are significantly worse than officials had suggested only a week ago. A net loss of 400 seats - with 4,361 seats up for grabs - would represent a grievous blow and take the number of Labour councillors nationally down to around 6,000, the lowest figure since the 1980s.

Labour insiders report no great enthusiasm for David Cameron's Conservatives on the doorstep but acknowledge votes are ebbing away to the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the BNP. The Lib Dems could come second to the Tories on share of vote, as in 2004.

The Conservatives were keeping expectations low but they need at least 100 extra council seats to claim some success.

2. I have a problem with your nick
It reminds me of a kid outside an open window, taunting the kid with chicken pox inside and explaining how lovely the day is and how everyone is planning to ride their bikes out to the pond and do some fishing.

Do you have to keep rubbing it in like that? It's just not fair
