US 'interference' halts UN renovations
US 'interference' halts UN renovations
By Irwin Arieff in the United Nations
05may06

THE manager of a costly and much-delayed plan to renovate the United Nations' New York headquarters announced overnight that he was resigning in frustration after less than a year in the job.

New York real estate veteran Louis Frederick Reuter, 62, is executive director of the UN Capital Master Plan and has privately complained of US interference in his work as well as other problems that have prevented the plan from going forward as quickly as he liked, associates said.

He told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan he would leave on June 30.
(snip)

It acted over the objection of Mr Bolton, who had held up the money for weeks while trying to resolve some of Washington's concerns before the work began.
(snip/...)

2. Well, if the UN continues to refuse to accept...
...it's appointed role as an instrument of US foreign policy, it can't expect any favors from Uncle Sam. I mean, the US spent a lot of money setting the UN up to be its shill and now the damn thing keeps pretending it's got a mind of its own. Must be very frustrating for BushCo.

4. A good idea.
I'm trying to think of somewhere to relocate it where it would be immune from local political pressure and couldn't be held to ransom as it is today.

The Moon? No, the Chinese and Russians will own that soon.

The seabed? Too toxic and they risk having an oil rig drill through their roof.

Antarctica? I'll be nothing but a rocky outcrop within fifteen years.

Mars? The right wing will never agree to relocate to the 'Red' planet.

Anyone got any other suggestions?
