Ohio's chief justice says courts imperiled
Judicial independence focus of Akron speech; Taft ruling not cited

Making no specific mention of a decision granting Gov. Bob Taft the right to keep some policy records private, Ohio's Supreme Court chief justice warned Thursday that the independence of American courts is under attack.
Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer -- speaking before a gathering of about 500 in Akron at the annual luncheon of the Ohio State Bar Association -- told listeners that the very foundation of a constitutional democracy is impartial courts.
``In the past year, we have witnessed two phenomena in this country that have converged to threaten the impartiality of American courts,'' Moyer said.
``The first is attacks from organizations and public officials on judges for their decisions in specific cases -- attacks that threaten retribution and urge changes in jurisdiction of courts,'' Moyer said.
The second phenomenon, he said, is what he termed the dramatic ``politization'' of judicial selection.
