Capps supports exploring grounds for impeaching Bush
Capps explains why she is one of 36 co-sponsors

Rep. Lois Capps issued a statement this morning explaining her support of a House resolution exploring grounds for the impeachment of the president.

In that statement, Capps criticizes President George W. Bush’s mismanagement of the war in Iraq, the wiretapping campaign, and the response to Hurricane Katrina. Capps’ district includes the coastal areas of San Luis Obispo County.

Although the resolution was first introduced in December by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the fact that one of the now 36 co-sponsors includes Capps, D-Santa Barbara, has not been widely reported until an Online news site published a story Wednesday about two more members of Congress signing on (http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0605/S00063.htm).

2. Good for her!
I'm glad she has that seat, which her husband won after Andrea Seastrand (one of those unpleasant Class of '94 types) conducted rather vicious advertising against him. Unfortunately, Professor Capps died during his first term, but the current Rep. Capps picked up the torch.

5. And the best part of that victory over Seastrand?
(Hi, CB! :hi:)

The GOP had held that Congressional seat since 1946. And Walter Capps won it at a time when the media were gushing over Newt Gingrich and that "permanent, unstoppable Republican revolution."

As I remember, one thing that got Seastrand in trouble was her appearance at an extreme Fundie church, where she said some fairly stupid things. (Big surprise there.) When Seastrand tried to lie her way out of that one, an audio tape of her remarks turned up.

Whoops!

Then, when Lois Capps ran in her own right...fortunately for us...the GOP sent in its REAL lunatic fringe to gin up the campaign against her. Because Capps was pro-choice, they tried to paint her as a baby-killer, an extreme feminist, a Commie and all the usual stuff.

Never mind that Capps had spent about 30 years as a school nurse, and was well-known and respected by all her neighbors, including Republican voters. I heard that the local Repubs were furious about the smear campaign against Capps, and many of them voted for her as a Spite Vote against the GOP's sleazy tactics.

I'm right down the road from you, in the San Fernando Valley part of L.A. When I'm not in Egypt, that is.
