POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) - New Yorkers have little optimism for relief from soaring gasoline prices and most place the blame squarely on the administration and the oil companies.
A W-N-B-C/Marist Poll has found that New York State residents expect pump prices of close to four dollars a gallon by Memorial day.
The majority of respondents say the Bush Administration and the big oil companies are most responsible for soaring gas prices. And 82 percent believe surging prices at the pump are the result of price gouging, not added costs incurred by oil companies that have been passed on to consumers.
The poll says suggestions on how to fix things are new taxes on oil company profits, suspending the federal gasoline tax for two months, increasing tax breaks for hybrid cars and alternate fuel research.
