Chinese troops ready for UN peace mission
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2003-11/19/content_1188157.htm

<snip>

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet, by Wei Wu) -- A military company of over 240 Chinese soldiers is now well prepared to carry out peacekeeping missions in the war-torn West African nation of Liberia and is waiting for departure orders from the United Nations.

According to the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army of China, the company will be responsible for transportation tasks for other peacekeeping troops near the Liberian capital of Monrovia.

The mission is at the request of the United Nations and has been approved by the Chinese government and the Central Military Commission. A transportation regiment of the PLA is responsible for the selection of officers and soldiers.

2. China hasn't been Maoist for some time
I believe they officially recanted most of Mao's teachings something like 10 years ago. Now they are just a facist-sort of oligarchy. Hell, they even crack down on labor unions now, just like here!

6. Imagine the cost savings if those same sumarai sevens
had been taken to London to protect george instead of turning the whole affair into a $100 million security operation?

You know until I read this headline I never thought about the Chinese sending troops for peace keeping missions, they have quite a few I believe.

10. I don't think any US President wants to ask for the PLA to be everywhere
Imagine if W announces his great idea to ask the Chinese to supply X amount of troops for peace keeping missions. Next thing you know they would be everywhere. The US policies of the last 60 years were against just that.

Still they do have a lot of people...:shrug:

11. By my estimations...
The Chinese are the only country that could possibly contribute enough troops to 'Iraq peacekeeping' to actually make a difference. I don't see how anyone else could send more than a few thousand.

Fat chance of that happening, however. I believe the Chinese are quite well aware of the current oil chessgame (and are playing a very quiet, patient one themselves).
