Pennsylvania's Rendell Gets Double-Digit Lead
May 15, 2006

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Support for Ed Rendell has increased in the Keystone State, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 55 per cent of respondents in Pennsylvania would support the incumbent in this year’s gubernatorial election, while 33 per cent would vote for Republican rival Lynn Swann.

Rendell—a Democrat—has acted as Pennsylvania’s governor since January 2003. The former Philadelphia mayor defeated Mike Fisher in the November 2002 election with 53 per cent of the vote, ending eight consecutive years of Republican administrations.

Swann, a former football player, seeks to become the second African American governor in U.S. history. Support for Rendell increased by eight points since March, while backing for Swann fell by four points.

2. I was hoping Pennsylvanians weren't that stupid
I was born and raised in the Burgh and even though we love, love, love the Steelers, I cannot imagine people throwing away their lives to have a former Steeler ruin the state.

3. Lemme tell ya...
Ain't no way no how that those 'folks' living between Philly and Pittsburgh in the hinterlands (called Alabama by James Carville) are voting for a black guy no matter how well he played football.

They call Rendell "The Jew", even though other than Weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, I don't know a single person who ever saw him in a synagogue.

the fact that he's white will trump the religion thing this year. Most people have no idea how racist the middle of this state is. When the area around Williamsport became integrated due to rehab centers and halfway homes, the Klan sentiment grew dramatically. Rough country up there. Down here in the 5 County Philly area, Rendell will pull a large plurality and offset the rural vote. Allegheny County will follow suit. The African American population will not be fooled this year - they're smarter than everyone else when it comes to this stuff.

8. He was in my synagogue more than a few times
with Midge. But so were Joan and Arlen Specter. (I grew up in Philadelphia)

But your larger point is correct: as much as Pennsylvanians dislike Jews, they find rule by African Americans even more reprehensible. And besides that, PA had a previous two-term Jewish governor in the 70s, Milton Shapp.

11. Yeah...
and the power structure corrupted his administration beyond all recognition. He was actually a pretty reasonable individual - he went to a dentist on the same floor as I was on here in Center City and we used to exchange political ideas once in a while...

He died of Alzheimer's as did Hugh Scott, and a few other hot shot elected officials here in PA. IT was kind of weird for a while.

There are very few huge Rendell fans except for Rendell.

9. Just heard on CNBC about 5 minutes ago. Steve Forbes
said the Democrats will take the House and the Republicans will probably retain the Senate, but on the bright side the Republicans will take the Governors race in PA and Ohio. He said if Ken Blackwell wins he is a true Conservative and would make up for the other loses. He also did his usual Flat Tax bullshit.
