McCain urges respect for different views

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Sen. John McCain, looking to heal a rift with the religious conservatives who undermined his 2000 White House bid, told students graduating at the Rev. Jerry Falwell's university Saturday that Americans have a right to disagree on issues but should maintain respect for each other.

The Arizona Republican specifically referred to disagreements over the war in Iraq during his commencement address at Liberty University. He noted that the war "has taken innocent life," but he said he has stood his ground in support of it because he believed "my country's interests and values required it."

McCain defended the rights of those who disagree with him and argued that "Americans deserve more than tolerance from one another."

"We deserve each other's respect, whether we think each other right or wrong in our views, as long as our character and our sincerity merit respect, and as long as we share, for all our differences, for all the noisy debates that enliven our politics, a mutual devotion to the sublime idea that this nation was conceived in - that freedom is the inalienable right of mankind, and in accord with the laws of nature and nature's creator," he said.

1. Forget it, Johnny
The religious right is totally insane, and after the Repukes have battered Dems for the past 20 years with lies, insults and depravity, we ain't gonna make nice. When we take over, there is going to be a purge of all political appointees, lobbying firms and anything else that we can legally cleanse of your infestation.

2. Nope. No Way. No How.
No respect for the fist in my face, nor the spit on my body, nor the tar and feathers, nor the derision, nor the lawbreaking, nor the destruction of all I hold dear.

If those were merely views, there would be no problem. They aren't views, they are a conspiracy to enslave, defraud and kill people.

3. Sorry, no can do...
I was told this weekend that if I wanted to attend the family function next weekend to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday, that I would eat what everyone else ate. There would be nothing on the menu to accomodate a "tree-hugging, liberal, hippy, vegetarian." (Don't you love my tolerant family?) They have decided to not serve a salad, just to show me how much they care!! :sarcasm:

Not to be out done, I am still attending my grandmother's funtion, she is not the one that made these comments. I am taking the high road on this, and will stop by a suitable restaurant and purchase a vegetarian meal to bring with me. This will make their heads spin off!! haha

So, sorry, John McCain my years of being respectful of others while being demonized by them at the same time are over. You be respectful of me and I will return the favor. You treat me like I don't matter, and I will return that favor as well.

4. Heck, be a TOTAL TOAD!!!
Show up with a slew of vegan/vegetarian hors d'ouvres too, an assortment of things tasty and fabulous; maybe a fruit plate, too (who can resist a good fruit plate?). Smile all the while!

Whatever you do, don't let 'em get to ya! Betcha a donut grandma will prefer your stuff!
