HARRISBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania voters get a chance Tuesday to show whether they are still angry at lawmakers who voted to give themselves a big raise in the dead of night and set the stage for a high-profile U.S. Senate race.
Primaries are also scheduled in Oregon, where Gov. Ted Kulongoski faces two rivals for the Democratic nomination, and in Kentucky, where there are lively Democratic contests in at least two congressional districts.
Pennsylvania legislators boosted their salaries by up to 54 percent during a dead-of-night vote taken with no public hearing or floor debate last year. Four months later, after an outcry, they reversed themselves. Sixty-one incumbents in the 253-member Legislature face primary challenges, the most since 1980.

Pennsylvania voters also are expected to choose a Democrat to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record). The race is being closely watched nationally because Santorum, the No. 3 Senate Republican, is closely allied with President Bush on issues such as gay marriage and private accounts for Social Security.
