Emergency bill for drug coverage OK'd

May 16, 2006

SACRAMENTO – Lawmakers approved emergency legislation yesterday to allow the state to continue underwriting prescription drug benefits for thousands of the state's poorest senior citizens who face problems getting coverage through Medicare.

By a 56-5 vote, the Assembly approved a bill to authorize the state to pick up the cost of prescriptions for seniors and the disabled until the end of January. It applies to those whose coverage was transferred from Medi-Cal to the new federal Medicare drug program, which took effect this year.

The bill goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who plans to sign it into law.
